Approved for chickens in Omaha NE!

Hi,
I'm a fellow Omahan (?)...so yeah, Health Inspector came out and told me that I was good and I need simply send in the paper work and I'm good. I called to ask some questions as my neighbors (Aksarben Villa/60th & Center area) are quite close; our houses are less than 20' apart and the inspector asked if he could just stop by today so I said yeah and he came by and cleared me. Told me send in papers and we're good, even brought the paperwork with him for me. Also , fortunately he didn't seem to care whether neighbors liked it or not. Even said he liked me setup, I'm converting an old green house to a run and attaching an outer coop, all of which are anchored to a frame anchored to the ground. He was very pleasant for an inspector. After paying the d@*n cable bill (went up AGAIN) I needed a plus today.

Take Care,
J

Congratulations! I'm glad you had the same positive experience with the Health Department that I had. My chicks are growing like...well, like chicks!! Four are already in the coop and the rest are feathering out nicely. Good luck with your girls!!

You're pretty close to where I live too.........60th and I-80 area.....

I came across this thread and realized I need to update. Now have 6 hefty gals, 4 Barred Rocks and 2 Lt Brahmas. Has been nothing but a positive experience. When I filled out the permit info to send to Health Dept I was undecided on how many chickens I wanted, so wrote down 6-8 and the permit came listing "6-8" chickens. Made me laugh.

I live in Omaha and I actually went by the book and I got my permit before I got my chickens. It doesn't cost anything for the permit. When I got my permit they asked me how many chickens I was going to get and I said 4 or 5 and that is what they gave me the permit for. I want to see if I can have more. I think I read that you can have 10 hens in the city limits. I need to ask the health dept. about that. They never inspected my place. To the person that got chickens and doesn't have a permit I think I would do it now. How would they know? No one has complained evidently so I wouldn't worry about it. I told my neighbors ahead of time. They never complained about me getting chickens. They get a kick out of it.

That's the same thing I did.. Said I wanted 4 or 5 and they did the same thing with me. I would like to have more.

You do have to renew your permit yearly. I only know this because I just got my permit in the last 3 months.

That cracks me up. I agree with you about all the rules but it doesn't do any good to complain. I am lucky and have a big yard and am farther than 25 feet from my neighbors but they all seem to enjoy the chickens anyway so it doesn't matter. Take care.
