April 2010 Pullets- wanna wait with me?

I keep hoping to be able to post here that my lay-abouts have finally gotten the hang of something other than eating and pooping.

Seriously though, I'm so excited for all you lucky egg-laying chicken owners! We got our older girls on April 10 and they were about 5 days old at the time, so I figure they gotta be close. Right? Please??

This morning my Red Star Ruby hunkered down when I reached to pet her. She flared her wings slightly and like walked in place with her feet still squating. very funny looking....I'm guessing she'll be the first to lay.

My 19 spring pullets (hatched April 4) are starting to lay. They found their way into the big girls' coop, and, accompanied by their rooster, found the nest boxes. For once the big girls didn't chase them off--I think the presence of Peter, the roo, made the difference. He stands guard. The pullets are "his", as he was in their hatch and grew up with them (He was an accident. I ordered all pullets). There have been some very small eggs, and one of the Golden Comets was just leaving the nest yesterday as I came in. Only one egg was still warm, a decent size, light brown, elongated egg, so it must have been hers.

The grocery store would call it large. I would call it medium, as I've had some that were so big I couldn't close the lid of a large or medium carton.

So they will eventually get there. There is so much egg song out there (they are making a racket) that I don't even check till after 4 pm to give everyone a chance to get finished. I hate to disturb a hen in the laying box.

So, it'll happen.

I've waited long enough. Our pulletts were hatched on Easter Sunday and so far we have gotten 3 little eggs. I've had to take extreme measures. I didn't want too, but I had too. Today I posted a picture of Col. Harland Sanders holding a bucket of fried chicken over the nest boxes. Tomorrow I expect to get at least four eggs. I'll keep you posted

What a great idea. We will have to try that with our 20 wk white leghorn. She is squatting, but her comb isn't quite mature. SHe is also talking a lot more. I'm sure we will see something soon, especially if I give some incentive- like the wrapper from a KFC sandwich...

My 7 ladies born April 15th, one small egg yesterday, a larger one today. Not sure from whom but have seen one Australorp messing around in the nesting box.

Still waiting on our April hatches. The one update I have is that one of our 2 splash orps that we couldn't sex has started to crow-- badly. The bad news is that it's the one we thought was a hen! Other one has had large red comb forever, but now looks more henish in the feathering. RIRs the same age aren't doing anything:(

I heard the egg song today, ran to the coop but didn't see which one did it. The coop was empty, everybody outside,no egg, but there was at least one chick in the nesting boxes. Two of the nesting boxes had definitely been messed with. Some nice round imprint. That is the first time one of them had even touched the nesting boxes. So some progress here !!!!!
They where all hatched April 12, so are almost 19 weeks old. Oh, and I put in a dish with oyster shell, they are on flock raiser now.
I really have my hopes high for this week
