April 2021 Hatch - A - Long

Pics
If my air cells are saddled, at what point would it be a good idea to put them in cut down egg cartons? They lay on their sides in our small incubator, and we are hand turning. It's pretty stuffed in there and we are on day 12.
I would have set them sitting up from the beginning. You can turn eggs while they’re upright putting them in a different position ever 3-4 hours. Having them upright would allow the air cell to settle.

Quail still aren’t out... it’s because I’m home. Once I go to church group tonight I know that they’ll be hatched when I get home 😂 Then I will have to put them in my sweatshirt pocket and run to the shed where the Brooder is.

Mrs Tweedy Only accepted one of the chicks so I put the others in the brooder. The chick with her is eating and drinking... She was dribbling water on her chest and the chick was drinking it that way, I have never seen that before. It was interesting to see.

Today I took out 45 chicks... plus helped 2 out of the shell. I know you shouldn't help... and yes.. they didn't make it... I had to cull them.
I also had to cull another one... At first I didn't notice...but when I wanted to put a marking ring on it... I saw this. Webbed feet... extra toes and deformed toes..It also did not want to stand up too much..Then the nose had what looked like some sort of growth. But when you looked closer you saw that it was open...like a cleft lip. I have not seen anything like that before.
But I have 44 chicks that are healthy and happy. They got their Marek shot today. It was an exciting and exhausting day for them.

This clutch is now done.
We had 16 silkies hatch, and 3 who didn’t make it.
Of the three who didn’t hatch, 2 zipped halfway before quitting and one hit a vein and died before it could pip.

Of the 16 who did hatch, I’ve just moved 14 of them to the brooder and left the last two to finish drying off and find their legs.
