I tried giving my BO chicks a couple days before they hatched (4 days ago) and its like she knew they weren't hers, these chicks were only 3 days old at the time, still had a beak chip and an umbilical sticking out and they still stumbled, she wanted no part of them. Also noting it is her first time. As of Day 21, all 6 chicks of her own are accepted by her and she's calling them. Then again ive never had a hen who didn't eventually take chicks, but i have had hens only take chicks of a certain color.Perhaps give her another chance. If it was her first time, she may have been confused and unsure what the heck was going on. I'd worry more about the other chickens pecking at eggs and chicks.
I let one of my OEGB hatch out a clutch in November, while still in the enclosure with the roo and two other hens. three hatched although only two survived (found one chick dead with no wounds) and they were raised by the whole flock. There was one egg though that had started hatching that had it's poor feet sticking out and pecked. I tried putting it back under the broody, but found it kicked out again later. Thought the chick was dead but noticed very very faint movement from a very very cold (and injured) chick. I breathed on it to warm it up until the incubator was up to temp. That chick is now a lovely little cockerel, albeit missing toes!
I know, that had nothing to do with your situation, but I felt like sharing.![]()
We meet again48 hours in the incubator and zero sign of any development!
My past two hatches (all I can go by) I’ve seen some action. Slight veining and a spot at least at this point. Needless to say I’m concerned. They all look clear! Obviously it’s early and I’ll keep checking but oh my goodness I’m worried. Eggs were shipped and got here within 24 hours and packed so well! Blah.
On a bright note my dog hung out with the 7 week olds outside today and did so well! She’s a reactive sassy pup but a herding dog and she might have found her ‘job’ watching the chickens![]()
Looks like an internal pip - you should be able to hear it nowWhat day would you say these are on? Gave them to a broody when I set my eggs inside. Brought them back in as the original broody was not doing a great job…she was off longer than I was comfortable with and eggs kept getting cold…is this one trying to internally pip?
