April 2023 Hatch-A-Long

Pics
I have a little black chick, it is bigger now, but I had named her "Nub" because she was so little.

Lost one. :( No, not Ponyboy, but one that had pipped last night.

I noticed the pip hadn't gotten any bigger and took the egg out. No sound from inside. I carefully peeled back the membrane and shell, gently poked the little one. No movement.

Took the chick out of the egg. Yolk absorbed. Fully formed, no defects. WHY did it die??!
These kind are the hardest for me when I don’t have an explanation.

7 hatched. Two more have small pips and 1 doesn’t but I think it’s alive but just behind.

Hard to tell colors but I think 3 are buff with blue leakage, 1 is lavender, 1 is blue, and 2 are black. But the blue / black are just guesses. Won’t know for a while. Everyone has the same daddy. He’s blue but carries the lavender gene and the red gene. He also is rose comb but carries the single comb so he can throw all sorts of different babies. Eager to see how they turn out.

In all the hatching excitement this weekend I forgot to post that I put I think 72 eggs into lockdown on Friday. They’re supposed to hatch tomorrow… and then my incubators will all be empty 😳 that will be a weird feeling after all this marathon hatching but I’m collecting eggs from my flock for a couple of people that have requested more naked necks. I’ll probably set them next week sometime after I get a chance to vacuum all the hatch fluff out of my cabinet.

Getting discouraged again. Another chick DIS after pip. Three live chicks, two of them assists. And a bunch more eggs that aren't even doing anything...

One more is pipped, and the chick is still clicking away and chirping in there, so...

I think the power outage did affect these ones, since they were so close to hatching. The other batches *seem* okay, but I'll know by this time next week.

Tomorrow, I'll do a 'float test' on the unpipped eggs.

Hi everyone, may I step in? Last Monday my OE Edgar sat on 10 eggs: 5 light blue from my little Araucana, 3 light pink from a barred EE and 2 from my favourite BCM. Apparently those were not enough, and on the 2nd day Edgar layed her own greenish brown egg, so now she has 11 eggs. They should hatch around April 24th, let's see what happens!View attachment 3460958
Here she is: View attachment 3460964
And this is my OE rooster, Napoleone, who doesn't seems to rejoice about his fatherhood, but maybe he just dissimulates well!View attachment 3460966
Hope some of those blu eggs will give me a hen who lays green eggs!
Looks like we'll be doing a pullet-cockerel guessing in about 2 months again 😅
Beautiful eggs! ❤️ Mine are due on 29th
