Oh, good job! As a long time visitor and subsequent member [over 4 years (badgeless)], I could feel it in my bones that we chickenkeepers here at BYC were almost overdue for news like this.

If the feed company can manipulate egg shell color through feed and they have over-ridden the genetic underpinning of shell color [which they have apparently done],

then, of course, the feed formula could be tweeked to provide a good Easter Egg Purple shell also. That is what I've been waiting for! I have always wanted that. I guess Langshans used to have a more purple-y egg, but it's been mostly lost over the years. And deep pink, too! I cannot wait!

This will put Easter Egg coloring kit businesses on the skids. Sad. But oh, well. Gotta keep up with technology.

I will be watching things unfold here. Gripping thread! Such egg-citing news!

I've heard of this product. They're totally all natural. For example, the pink eggshell line is derived from diluted red herrings. Great stuff!

As cool as this sounds, I think it would be more of a novelty than anything. I chose white leghorns when I bought my chicks last year because they're good layers. Sure I've wished I had a pretty colorful basket of eggs instead of just white and plan to get more of a variety when I can. However, my concern with this product is for anyone who intends to breed their chickens (as I hope to eventually) further down the line. How is this going to affect the breeders? Will the eggs still be fertile and what about the life span, genetics and health of the future chicks? There's a lot to be considered besides just the color of the eggs. A bit too close to GMO than I'm comfortable with.

Picture this -- the feed bag influences the color of the chicks -- blue down, pink down, green down and dark brown down.

Colors of choice would be a great name. As for me, my mixed flock of "barnyard mutts" give me a nice range of light tan through dark brown eggs. Therefore, it is not a product that I will have any use for. Interesting though.
