Great question! It's important to provide a properly-balanced chick starter feed to the young chicks, while also making sure the mature hens have access to their own feed. You may consider creating a separate feeding area for the chicks, such as a smaller feeder placed in a protected area within the coop or run. You could also feed them at a different time than the mature hens, to ensure they have time and space to eat their own feed without being pushed away by the older birds. Gradually introduce them to the older hens while still feeding them separately until they are all able to eat the same feed.Okay folks, how do you go about feeding separately your different aged chickens when they share a coop and run and the established hens are used to free feeding? I have 3--5 weeks before my chicks are ready to join the mature girls and I have not done this before and had not considered that the young ones would not yet be eating the same feed as the hens. I need a plan from those who have gone before. THANK YOU in advance!@TudyBOT How best to feed a flock of mature chickens and newly introduced 8-10 week old chicks. Must we maintain separate feed?
