I went to the grocery store on the way home from the dentist on April 1st. Bought a dozen brown eggs and took them home. I went out to the coop and planted 6 of them in two nests and brought in two very distinctive eggs that two of our chooks produce each morning.
I was prepping a room to be painted so I made sure that I stayed in there all day long. After lunch my wife, Kathy went out there to gather eggs and change water. She came back all excited with 13 eggs in her bucket to add to the two I had brought in earlier. She was over the moon to think that our 10 chooks, half of them over the hill had laid 15 eggs in a single day.
Since I still had a half dozen hidden in another fridge, I salted down the nests the next AM and sure enough, she came running in all excited that our 10 chickens had laid 11 eggs.
I kept a straight face and acted as if I was as amazed as she was.
I had marked the store-bought eggs with a sharpie, adding a tiny black dot to each one. I finally let her off of the hook yesterday evening after she had bragged to our daughter about our super chickens.
Funny thing is, half of them are 5 yrs old and only a few months ago came back to life again when the newbies were integrated in and began to lay.
I thought it best to end the thing before she began to tell the story to people in our church or even stand up to give a testimony about our egg miracle.
On April fools day our true egg count was 9 eggs from five chickens that are 5 yrs old and five that are 5 months old. So in reality, I suppose the chickens got one over on me!
