April Hatch-Along!!!!!!! Whos with me?????

My second egg didn't make it.

At least I have one gorgeous chick, who is thriving.

My mini incubator has now been loaned out for someone else who wants to hatch ducks (with my fertilised eggs).

Less than two weeks now to see if my broody bantam successfully hatches the other two duck eggs of my experiment

Sorry about the second egg.

I'm on standby in case my friend's broody leaves the nest. We set at the same time, and I could easily fit hers into the bator in an emergency. I'm expecting she'll get a better hatch rate than I. But then, she also started with more eggs.

I am 19 days into this batch. I started off with 9 Campbell eggs that survived shipping from New Mexico, and 4 eggs collected from my Rouen.

The shipped eggs didn't look too good from the start, and I have lost a lot of them. 13 shipped in the box. 4 broke in transit. 3 didn't survive the first week. I broke one by accident, and we found one more failed egg when we candled this evening. I am now down to 4 shipped Campbell eggs.

All 4 Rouen eggs from our coop are doing great!

Overall, this has not been a great experience with shipped eggs. I am not sure that I'll try shipped eggs again soon!

Day 19 Candling, Live egg. The arteries didn't show up well in this photo, but there were good blood vessels along the edge of the air cell. I could see movement inside, and when the light was just right, I could see some little duckling parts in silhouette.

Day 19 Candling, failed egg. No apparent blood vessels. More of the egg was translucent, not opaque with duckling the way the other eggs were. Some small black or brown masses seen next to air cell.

I set 46 eggs last sunday night (April 15th). Have a dozen silver/gold welsh harlequin, 1 dozen rouen, 8 silver appleyard and the rest are a mix from my ducks (rouen, saxony and silver appleyard)
On day 6 so I'm waiting a few days until I candle. Sooo excited!! Should hatch around the 10th or so I'm guessing.. I should really figure that out! LOL

Oh, have I ever seen more than my share of those lately. I've had great success with shipped eggs from across the country and then I've had nightmarish luck with other shipped eggs. With both ends of the spectrum, the eggs were packaged well. Probably met a sadistic postal worker somewhere along the line.

Got some eggs from a BYC'er. Even with awesome packaging, the po broke a couple in transit and all but two were scrambled. You just have to decide what acceptible risk is.

I need to photograph the scramblies before I toss them.

Hi all. I got tired of running to the computer to calculate relative humidity every day, so I made a couple of quick reference charts so I could look up relative humidity. I have the Farhenheit version printed out and resting on top of my incubator. It makes things easier for me, especially 1st thing in the morning before my coffee.

Uhmm quick question? Do you think that these eggs will hatch with detached air cells????

You had set them in a carton to settle out the air cells, right? How are they looking now?

All of the eggs that I incubated this batch that started with weird or detached air cells have died. The 4 shipped eggs I have left are the 4 that had the best looking air cells right out of the box. I remember searching this forum a few weeks ago for weird and detached air cell success stories, and I found a few.
