April Hatch Along

Pics

23 turkey chicks in the brooder. SO CUTE. 3 more in the incubator. 26 or more of of 39 turkey eggs, seems pretty good for my rates.

Very happy for you! They are adorable!

Bieles? Still 0...no sign of anything.

Keep in mind...Cochin eggs and Biele eggs arrived within minutes of each other at the PO...I saw who handled which box. The girl who handled the Cochins had them sitting nicely on the front counter for pickup. The POSTMASTER had tossed the Biele eggs in back ....with a huge neon note on box for "call for pickup" . Not total proof but what would a reasonable person suspect? The Biele eggs had a FRESHLY broken egg...hadn't even had time to run into the packing and was wet, not dry or sticky.

Just ranting folks... just ranting....

Keep em comin!!

Sorry about the bieles... that's a bummer.

I just wanted to share that I just had my 3rd hatch and I assisted 3 chicks who are now doing great. 2 were shrink wrapped and I think the third was just too big lol. My first two hatches I was so afraid to assist because of things I've read, not here, but just typical internet chicken blogs.. and I lost several chicks after the external pip. I followed the strict lockdown rules those times and felt more horrible with each loss of a beautiful, fully formed chick. This time when my intuition told me something was wrong and they weren't progressing, I couldn't just sit and watch. Assisting them was pretty easy, after making sure the blood vessels were dried up and yolk was absorbed. The process took a while, but I'm happy to report I didn't lose any chicks after external pip this time and all are chirping around making me so proud.

There are some wonderful Hands-On people here, and some Smack-Your-Hand folks too. I say MY EGGS, MY DECISION. Don't ever let anyone make you feel bad for doing something that you feel in your gut. In my opinion, the worse feeling is letting it suffer because someone told you NOT to do something. If you trust yourself, and it goes badly, then at least you trusted yourself.

Have you been to the Hands On Hatching Help thread? Great group of knowledgeable folks there, always willing to help.

The 8 Cochin eggs I set on Sunday all appear to have healthy vein growth!

They also all have VERY wonky air cells from shipping. I'll just have to keep an eye on them.

Actually, the USPS is the only entity that allows the shipment of anything poultry related. All other carriers will not (or are not legally allowed to).

Guess my days of shipped eggs are over. :( unless I send them to my friend's PO. Thank goodness when I ordered the heritage Dominiques that I ordered, I have them scheduled to go to HER PO. Way too much money involved to even think of letting them come through here. Just praying I get a good candle on the duck eggs Sunday...have a bad feeling about them too since he acted like they weren't there. :( I just cannot wrap my head around what makes some people tick.

Cochin # 8 pipping and probably out soon....out of 15 shipped eggs from WVduckchick...I am happy and so is the friend who wanted the Cochins. :)

Small consolation, but at least you proved its not your hatching abilities! Good luck with the ducks.

Great job and congrats!!! Enjoy those new babies!!!

Tossed 7 more. The last 60 are in there through hatch day. I candled all of them. The development doesn't seem even between breeds. Today is day 14. I'll turn them a few more times today then separate them into their own bins. I'll increase humidity Monday. Hatch will be Th-Sat.
Coming soon!!!
