April Hatch Along

Pics
I stick to the 21 day schedule, but watch them closely. If I candle and see any internal pips earlier...before was on day 19...I lock them down. I'm not too great on the candling thing and it's hard for me to see in the bantam eggs...but I try..LOL!

Haha!! Yeah, they're tiny little suckers, especially since they're in with the conglomeration of big old Biele eggs, and very large 55s!! Thankfully, they'll have their own time in the hatching bator alone, so I can be more attentive. First candle went pretty well with them, but probably because I have a fancy candler with a bantam fitting (ooo, ahhh)... :lau They were shipped, and I only lost 3 of the 18 due to being shaken - wwwaaaayyyy better than most of my shipped eggs, and their tiny little air cells looked pretty good!!

I did my candling. All 7 Flower Hen eggs look good. I see veins. Some are more obvious than others. One Cream Legbar egg had the red ring of death, so it was cracked and shown to my daughter and put in a bowl so that hubby can see it in the morning. Yeah, the family is curious! But those Black Copper Marans...

I CAN NOT see into them. I don't know what I'm going to do. I tried my egg candler and two different flash lights. I'm going to have to fashion something. Any tips?

I have not had good luck with shipped eggs, so I only do local now. Thank goodness I can find them in my area! I think I NEED a fancy candler...LOL!!! I use a small flashlight...and the darker eggs are hard to see in! I have quail eggs and those babies are tough to see in...do they make fancy quail candlers???

I think bantam eggs in general ship better.

I'd love to see the fancy candler

They get much easier to see once the embryos are larger. You will definitely see movement by day 14 if they are viable. Veins - I never could really make them out well, even with my fancy, schmancy candler - although blood rings were pretty visible. It's my old joke (so bear with me, I have a new audience) that Marans and some green shelled embryos are all secretly in the witness protection program!

It's a MagicFly egg candler with bantam attachment which would probably be small enough for quail too. It wasn't all that expensive, and I bought it before I really knew anything about hatching - but it sure lights up the eggs, I haven't had to replace a bulb, and the attachments are rubber, so they keep light from seeping out.
700

I've seen way cooler ones with bases and stands... maybe when I make my first million selling chickens... :gig or, first hundred... or...

witness protection! I love it. I practiced candling on some of the eggs from my barnyard flock and definitely noticed that a couple of my EE lay just the right color green that makes it tough to see into.

Looking good!

Good thing they are such pretty chicky-doodles! I guess it comes with an air of mystery.

Oooh, that's neat. I might like to find myself one that plugs in. I had to put new batteries in mine tonight to get the brightness that I needed.

We had a few bouts of high winds and rain yesterday and when I got home from work the power was out, as I expected it would be. It came back on about an hour later. At most they were without power for 9 hours. The temp in the incubator was at about 80 degrees so I think they'll be fine. For once it worked out well that I was using the chinese incubator, which I have to keep wrapped in the styrofoam from the packaging to maintain steady temps, rather than my Farm Innovators. The FI would turn itself back on if the power came back on and the chinese won't, but if the power doesn't come back on the FI loses temp a lot faster.
