As of this morning, we have two chicks out, both Olive eggers. The first chick out wasn't even an egg that was pipped last night! We also have one egg fully zipped, and four other eggs visibly pipped. Woohoo!

Oesdog you should try some plain, unscented candle wax. My toddler accidentally cracked one of my growing eggs early on, with one pretty hefty dented spot as well as some hairline cracks. I coated the egg in melted wax in all the cracked areas and probably more because it was harder than I thought! Lol The wax just didn't want to pour out where I wanted it. But it worked! There is wax on probably 1/3 to 1/2 of the shell in total and I'm going on day 17 with it still doing fine.

As for us, just counting down the days and hoping for good results. Started with 42 eggs, have had 10 non fertile, one early quitter and one early death around day 7.

And about 10 days after I started them one of my black Australorp hens started brooding! She's got 11 eggs going. I noticed another BA has been trying to brood, even sat on the one fake egg we have out there. I'm tempted to let her have some of my incubator eggs but I'm not sure if that's a good idea this late in the process. Should I let her sit on the fake egg the next couple nights and then bring her my incubator eggs the night before I expect them to hatch? Or just leave well enough alone?

Yes I thought that would be best - I was not much impressed with the thought of Nail varnishing it? I know there are lots of chemicals in Nail varnish and it isn't as strong as candle wax. Anyhow it is all Waxed up now so hopefully it is going to be strong enough. I nothiced that the crack is more pronounced tonight so the chick must be growing. I am hoping it will be ok? The wax does seem to give it a firmness that it lacked.

ok................. sooooooooooooooooooooo............ I am haveing problems with that breeder and need advice! ASAP! here is what has happened so far

my E-mail #1

They did arrive and are in perfect condition..... I am however concerned about their size and the amount of poo on three of them.... They are almost half the size of my sebright bantam eggs and I have certainly never had a standard size hamburg lay such a small egg, my hamburg eggs are 3 times the size of these eggs. If these eggs are from standard size hamburgs then are they from young birds, or do your birds just lay super tiny eggs? Or could they be from bantam hamburgs? As I do not see how these could hatch and grow to a normal size... Also 3 of them have a good amount of poo on them and I am concerned about putting them in the incubator with my other eggs, for fear of contamination... So I will have to clean them which is not something I was expecting or wanting to have to do when purchasing such expensive eggs from a reputable breeder such as yourself... I came to you for these eggs because I could not find standard size citron hamburgs anywhere... but the bantam size is readily available and for much less.... Please let me know you thoughts on this, as right now I am at a loss, as I had hoped to come back to you for your Isabel Brahma eggs... but now I am worried that I would be equally disappointed in them as I am the citron hamburg eggs... to small and to dirty.... but I do know that some times crazy things can happen and that this may not be the normal quality of your eggs and I would like to give you a chance to show me that this is the case
Thank you for your time and I look forward to resolving this matter
Ann

my Email #2
Hi, I have not received a response yet..... and I am wanting some resolvement after the eggs I received did not match what I thought I was buying..... I know that some eggs can be dirty and this in itself was not the problem, though I was also disappointed that I did not receive even one extra egg, as is common practice with shipped eggs... it is the size of the eggs... I have posted picture on BYC (I have as to this point NOT told anyone your name) comparing them to my bantams and hamburg eggs and everyone agrees that they are bantams not standard hamburg eggs ... and this a major problem with me as I did NOT WANT bantams and you assured me that they were not bantams... I would not have purchases them had I known... and I would like either a refund on my money (including shipping), or a discount on the Isabel Brahma eggs (if you do this I would like 4 eggs for (*price edited out*) + shipping) and it will have to be in 3 more weeks as my incubator is full right now...but that would also give your birds more time to begin laying again... as YOU DO advertise them on BYC as HUGE birds that you will not be disappointed in.... I thought this would transfer to the hamburgs but dealing with the larger birds maybe you truly have thought the hamburgs were standard as they are a smaller bird.... I would honestly prefer the Brahma eggs to a refund, as I feel as though you are a great breeder and would like to be able to praise your beautiful birds on BYC where I am sure I could get you more business, rather than complain about this last order of misrepresented eggs
Thank you and I do not have any hard feelings about you so long as we can work something out
Ann

Their responce

Ann,

The Citron Spangled Hamburgs are only available in this color as bantams, which is the standard size for this color. We cannot help that you read a post for other breeds we offer and thought that information transferred to all breeds. As far as the extra egg, we ship what the customer orders, and if we have extra we will occasionally throw one in. We currently only have a pair of the Hamburgs and an extra egg was not available to send to you since you wanted the eggs as fast as we could get them to you. If you notice on our store page, we have a no refund or return policy and we hold to that. We will work with customers if they show proof that eggs or birds arrived in poor condition. We packed your order the way you desired and shipped as soon as we had the quantity of eggs desired. There was no misrepresentation of the eggs on our patr, since to the best of our knowledge this color only exists in bantam. When customers place an order it is believed that they know what they want and know what they are ordering. Again, we cannot offer a refund because in the previous email you stated "I thought this would transfer to the Hamburgs." There was no misrepresentation on our part and we never said these were large birds. The Citron Spangled Hamburgs are pictured on our webpage as well which shows the actual size of the birds. As far as the threats of complaining about this transaction on BYC and other forums, that is unacceptable and if this happens we will take the necessary action to remove the comments. It is presumed that when buyers ask for a certain breed or place an order that they know what they are purchasing. The threats in the last email can be construed as blackmail and will not be tolerated.

My responce back

Below is the email I am referring to where I specifically state that they are standard not bantam size... and while you said they looked like bantams "to you" BECAUSE you worked with the large breeds YOU STATED that they were standard sized for Hamburgs... not citron hamburgs, but just Hamburgs...

I am not trying to black mail you I only want what I thought I was paying for and as you can see below you clearly miss-represented them... and if this is how you deal with problems when the mistake is on you then I have no problem telling other about my experience....I HAVE DONE NOTHING WRONG HERE .... and had no reason to expect them to be bantam size after this e-mail... and that is when I paid after a 4th conformation about their standard.... not bantam size

HI Ann, I would consider them bantam but that's because I deal with gigantic Brahma and oprington lol. They are standard size for Hamburg. Yes we could do the 4 citrons for next week. I forsee them beginning to lay after this awesome upcoming weekend. (*edited out prices here*)

Sorry! this will be the last email today! haha....two questions
1) Are the citron hamburgs standard size ? Which is just a bit smaller than a normal chicken and NOT bantam sized... right?
2) would you be able to do just the 4 citron eggs for next week??? if possible what would the cost with shipping be?

Thanks you so much!

So who is right in this... was I wrong or are they in the wrong? I was only being honest as far as the BYC comment goes... I get my support here and will vent if is is good or bad... or is tha wrong?

The problem I think here is that the egg was already damaged from the bad packaging in the post. So it has been fractured into little bits - hairline cracks all over. Now the chick is deffinately alive and growing the crack have become more pronounced because of the pressure growing inside of the egg. It probably wont survive if it gets too much pressure as the egg will just rupture.
IT is a case of buying time. DH thinks he could paint the shell with hot nail varnish but I don;t think that would be a good idea as it is full of chemicals and the shell is litterally fragmented.
I am trying to think what can we put " over the shell to A) Strengthem it B) Stop it "moving about" to prevent accidental cracking? - If it ruptures before 21 days - say only gets to 19 or 20 - I am not sure if a chick can survive premiture birth???? Lol - I need a neonatal unit! NO a chickanatal unit!

I don't hold much hope for the little one. I amsurprised to see a live chick inside of the shell at all. It is right on its date though. I was looking up the candling pics thread in the learning zone and it is bang on development.

Oes
Paper medical tape?
You would have to remove it (maybe) once the baby chick pips. but not chemicals..
I am right there with you. Give me 12 perfect eggs and one that needs help and I will think myself crazy trying to figure it out.

Vent away - I feel your pain ! My eggs were the wrong colour and not Dorkings at all. One was splatered all over the packaging and one came apart because it was stuck to the goo. Now a third is growing in a completely fractured egg which I have now had to cover with wax to try to save! - Go for it girl ! If you feel you didn;t get what you paid for then go for it.

For me I am sad that these are not what I thought DH was buying but I wanted a blue laying hen so it could work to my advantage so I am not that upset if only a hen chick would be hatched. Just my luck though all these will be roooooooooooooosters! - or Lizards?

Annabell, it seems to me that you are in the right and they are trying to use loopholes in verbage in order to make some cash. Your email was pretty specific in the Standard size request. TMHO!
