April Hatch Thread--Come Join Us!

Ha, dont panic!!! easy to say harder to do!!! :th  Im kinda freaking.....

but I have not been pulling on the chick :) at least I got that right! !... the first chick even without the membrain over it could not get out... the only time it would move would be for a sec when I talked and then it would stop and it looked to be drying in the shell!  so I took it out and held it and that seemed to help as it pushed and pushed, and finnaly poped out! yea my first chick!!!!!! I carfully palced it back in the incubator with the shell as a small piece was still attached to its butt... it is peeping strong now :) I will dampen the other membrains, they are not as exhausted as the first

BUT what about the un-pipped ones????  are they getting shrink wraped? I mean Could they be getting shrink wraped and not be able to pip....or does the shrink wrapping only happen once they pip? It seemed to me that it is much harder than it should be, as one of them that had pipped I broke the shell only, and just a bit and the chick was desperatly trying to break the membrain to breath I very gently let its beak out, but the membrain was hard and dry and it had not even been broken yet

From what I've read on BYC, shrink wrapping only happens after pip. I think it was the combination of heat and the membrane no longer being protected from evaporation by the shell (?) I'd wait to hear from someone with experience, but you might not need to worry about the unpipped guys and gals yet. Sorry for your lost chick :(

I have eggs that are due to hatch on 4/13 also. What kind are yours?
Hi, I don't know what kind of incubator you have.
I have an LG...............and find I can keep the temp stable by wrapping a bath towel around it.
I leave the air holes open on one side..Have Also read that some folks set the incubator in a box..top open of course............

Be careful opening the incubator. The more you do the more humidity is loss. Like others have said follow the assisting instructions if need be. I usually wait till day 25 before "assist" any unpiped eggs.

I assist as needed. For example I had two this hatch that have just gotten cemented to the shell by the fan drying out their goop. If I can assist, I will assist. I also open the incubator to move chicks, etc. HOWEVER I ONLY open the incubator if the humidity is above 80%, and I usually take the incubator into a WARM STEAMY bathroom before helping. I also turn off the incubator when I open the lid, so that the fan doesn't blow more moisture out and instead goes stagnant. I have not had any shrink-wrapping, the problem I have is the fan drying out egg goop and cementing chicks to their shell.

Annabell, I'm worried that you are seeing the membrane inside the air cell and thinking they are shrink-wrapped. If you peel away the top of the air cell all you are looking at is the bottom membrane of the aircell, NOT the membrane around the chick that does the shrink wrapping.

It is extremely common for new hatchers to get antsy and dive right in, but it really isn't a good idea unless you know exactly what you're looking at and how to help. I would take a step back and leave them for awhile as it sounds like they just aren't ready yet, especially the unpipped eggs. You don't want to help too early and cause them to die that way.

Ok I have four hatched as of last night, one that hatched halfway but has not progressed. In afraid that after reading on here she may be stuck as it looks like the membrane has cemented to her! It's been about 12hours for her and she is still breathing. I think she needs assistance. Question: should I take the hatched chicks out? It has been 24hrs. I was afraid to open the bator. Can the humidity be too high? When one hatches it goes up to about 85% I still have 8 eggs in the bator two have little tiny pips that started yesterday, and they were rocking yesterday, but now I see no movement...

My incubator spiked to 104* last night at some point according to the digital. The digital currently reads 102* but standard thermometer says 100*. I'm praying my babies did not get cooked.:(

6 days leaft for half my eggs and 1 week for the other half...so excited! also cant wait to be able to turn off the bator and put it away as its driving me insane with its whole not able to keep the them temp where it should be if the temperature in the house changes.

a question to those more experienced day 14 for half the eggs is 12:30am of the 11th and day 14 for the other half is the 12th at 9:30pm....i hatch button quail so on the 14th day i turn of the egg turner but i was wondering when i should do it? do i ununplug and remove the eggs from the turner when its time for the first half? or the second half of eggs time? or maybe somewhere in the middle?

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Had a very busy day yesterday...was gone for most of the day yesterday. The big crowd is spitting those eggs out like crazy! I am so glad that they are doing so well on their fermented feed-good stuff. The silkies and chicks love theirs too, I make theirs a little different-but they seem to be doing really good with it. I can't believe how fast they are growing...it seems like they are changing by the minute. The ones we hatched out from our own flock- we are starting to be able to tell who came from whom. When they hatched it seemed like they all hatched at the same time. The one that was struggling with walking-you wouldn't believe it's the same chick.

I've been trying to come up with some names for the new polish-I have 3 creole, 3 blue...I'm thinking causion names and gemstone names-? Well I'm off to do some more work out in the yard...be back after while...
