April Hatch Thread--Come Join Us!

quick question..... I had two sussex go broody (found them this moring guarding the eggs I was collecting for breakfest haha).....can I put my goose eggs under them... Well I already emptied the still air and put eggs under one of them.... but I have my 4 good ones in the brinsea and one hen still broody on fake eggs hehe (I switched them out as soon as I knew she was broody and until I can figure out what I will put under her :)

I had decided to hatch my chicks (this saterday) in the brinsea despite the goose eggs... but now Im thinking broody hen will be safer for the goose eggs than the brinsea considering the hatch this weekend??? am I right in thinking this... is a hen good for goose eggs... will she raise them as well?

I think that is a good idea. She should take care of them as her own.

Hey fellow peeps! Just reading through the last couple of posts and I have to say you've hit the nail on the head

I wish I could've seen the look on my husbands face when I told him I wanted to start raising chickens so we could have our own eggs. He was driving home from work at the time but the silence through the phone was enough to know how he really felt (at the time). He may roll his eyes at me every once and a while but in 3 short years he has really come around. We have since moved to a 10 acre property which we're converting to a hobby farm and HE was the one who asked this past fall about when we're getting more chicks LOL. I think he has come around. Now he isn't surprised when I say things like, I'd like goats for milking, a donkey for livestock gaurding, etc. And now I can't keep this born city-boy off his green tractor hehehe.

So, the whole reason I stopped by was to see if I could join in your hatch-a-long? I'm ordering some eggs as we speak and some, if not all, should be shipping out on Monday or Tuesday

This will be our second hatch ever. As of right now, we're officially getting French Wheaten Marans and a variety of silkies. I'm still waiting to hear back from another farm about some wheaten/blue wheaten ameraucana eggs. I'm SUPER excited about this hatch!!!

Where is everyone else in their hatches? What's in the bator this round?

o, and to avoid the fav. nest box syndrome I have dummy eggs in each of the nests... they still have favorites but I get eggs from all nest boxes now, and just a few extras in the favorite boxes :)

I'm jumping in. This is my first hatch. I got a Farm Innovator 4200 with fan and turner as a gift from my DH

I set 8 barnyard mixes on March 30. Won't candle till day 10, but it is hard not to look sooner. Temps at 98-100 and 45% humidity and holding pretty steady. I want to try some of my own eggs before I spend money on shipped eggs. We are going to the Ohio show at Mt. Hope this weekend. I have to try to control myself. I really don't want a split hatch for my first time. Wish me luck. (I have to stop checking every 20 minutes for temp and humidity LOL)

That's exactly what I did with my first hatch :) Every time I went to the bathroom, got dressed for the day or bed, felt like I needed to stretch

I would check on the incubator. I tried not to candle before day 10 either but I couldn't resist. I made it 3 days LOL. This time around, I really hope I can wait till day 10. Good luck to you on your first hatch! And even better luck not becoming a hatch-aholic. The only reason I didn't start another hatch immediately after the first was because I was going to be having a human baby a couple months later and still needed to build the new baby coop

Hi people! Mind if join in? I've got 36 mystery chooks on the 11th, and 4 geese, 14 guineas, and 13 ducks on the 18th. Which is why I'm headed to the store for another hatcher/brooder thingy.

So if anyone needs a hatching buddy, there's what I've got!

I moved my broody Squeak today and OMG!!! you would have thought I was breaking the girl in half or something worse by how loud she was screaming. She could have scared a dinosaur. At first it was just the "I'm not happy about this."

squawks but when I went to put her in her new nest box it turned to "HE'S TRYING TO KILLING ME!!!!" screams.

It literally made my hair stand on end. This wasn't the cluck-cIuck-cluck-kiiing mad hen either she was convinced her life was about to end. Poor silly little girl. I may have to rename her after this. LOL
Then she wouldn't sit on her eggs for like an hour but now she has settled in. I'll leave her be for the rest of today.
Another silly happening with my broodies today was Cornelia got off her eggs for only 2minutes to stretch her legs but she has to have some nasty cramps cuz she gets off walks about 4 steps tries to stand up strait and just stops like half way up. Then in extra slow motion she sinks right back down to her belly. Then that was it. She turned around and waddled like a duck back to her eggs. It made me laugh. You gotta love the everyday suprises of raising animals.
