April Hatch Thread--Come Join Us!

I feel so far behind! I am only on what day 4???? OMG a lifetime to wait>???

I am sooo stuck to the incubator already and I am itching where the feathers are starting to grow through my skin!!!!!! - I am turning into a broody hen! yikes!!!!!

Oes
No worries many of us have staggered hatches or multiple ones going on at once. My 2nd set of Ameraucunas is on day 4 today. These are the ones I am hopeful to get more hens.... if only they were like gators and you could alter temps to get boys or girls!

They look a lot like my bronze turkey chicks

well, the tom is a Bourbon red. So it's entirely possible they are bourbons, but the Narragansett was laying in the coop and the bourbon hens in the nesting drum. So, I just cannot tell until they get their adult plumage. These eggs as well as the ones in my LG 9200 were collected either from the goat house (one of the bourbon red hens laid there) or the coop where the NG laid eggs. I didn't collect any from the nest drum. I think turkey chick are almost as fun to raise as the one gosling I have is a question..it wants to be close to us, but doesn't care for being touched and will run from you. But let it see you've left it's sphere of comfort and you hear it and see it running full tilt to get close to you. But the turkey chicks answer your call whistle and run to see if you have something for them.

Candled before lock-down, looks like 3 of my remaining 9 eggs are behind on development, of those 3, 2 may be early quitters but one had definite movement... one looked yucky with irregular splotchy dark and clear towards the pointy side but a large dark mass in the middle. For shipped eggs the air cells look pretty good and stable at this point sooooo my question is:

Those of you who have hatched shipped eggs do you hatch in the crate or on their sides and what do you see as pros and cons? I will officially lock down at 8pm tonight so I have not yet made up my mind. I keep reading conflicting information (which of course is because we all live in different areas and have different scenarios for hatching) and I am conflicted on what is best. What has worked best for you, in your opinion/experience?

Check this out. Ron is an expert hatcher who has better success than most with his shipped eggs and this is what he does

I second that motion ... I wish they were more like gators in determining sexes by temps as well!!!

I pour hot water on sponges inside the incubator with good success. I've also misted the walls of the bator (not the eggs) to raise humidity quickly. Good luck with your hatch!

Had 8 OEGB hatch yesterday, didn't see any pips when I left for work, no more out at 3 pm when I called home, but at 5 pm when I got home, 1 more newly hatched chick and another with a hole that I can see beak through. Maybe a few more will surprise me!
