Your Cat is jealous.Congrats![]()
Oooh a black sex link cross. They should be some beautiful birds. Boys should look barred like their mom and the girls will be black with red hackles. Good luck. I want to see these little guys.Hi All, trying to hatch my first clutch ever. I got my first chickens last year, 2 Plymoth Rocks (one hen) and 4 Sussex Reds (all male). The one hen and one of the Sussex cocks lived through the winter so I know they are survivors.![]()
I've saved a dozen eggs and started them in the incubator last night. Hoping they are viable, the hen (Georgette) went broody early in the spring but something got into her nest and broke the eggs so she decided the garage would be a safer laying spot - but even with a dozen eggs and a few extra fake ones she won't sit them so I got an incubator last night and put them in it.
I did not candle them yet, I am planning to do the first check Monday.
Fingers crossed.

Ok, so my shipped eggs are comming 3 days apart... have some ready to go in tonght (that will be a full 24hour wait from when I recieved them) and the other group is being shipped today![]()
Will it be better to wait till tomarrow morning/afternoon/night to put these in and then if I pick my eggs up from the post office sat morning I can set them late Saterday night (that is only waiting 12 hours) and the two batches will be 24- 36 hours apart... and I can probably treat them all the same for lockdown
OR
Should I go ahead with these tonight and set the others Sat night (after 12 hours) and that would be 2 days apart
OR
should I go ahead with these tonight AND wait a full 24 hours on the next ones.... and then they would be 3 1/2 days apart
OR should I wait till tomarrow for these AND wait a full 24 hours for the others .... and that would be back to 3 days apart
My eggs are on day 9. They are araucana x white leghorns. I candled last night and all 13 have something inside. They have had lots of veining and last night I witnessed movement in 6 of them. I'm going to check the other 7 tonight but I didn't want to have the incubator opened too long.
I have a newbie question since this is my first hatch. When you say the eggs move toward the end when the chick is getting in position is it just the chick moving inside or does the egg need to be positioned a certain way? Our eggs are on some cloth in the incubator to stop the vibrations from the fan affecting the eggs. It's a thickish piece of material so I doubt the eggs could move/roll anywhere. So does it matter which way the egg is facing? As long as the air cell is up and the pointy end of the egg is down.
Warrens are a type of Hybrid Chook. They look a lot like Rir and Gingernut Rangers but maybe not so red. Just a 300+ egg layer. Great Birds!Dumb question. What are warrens? That is our last name and I know my DH would go nuts for them. He already thinks I am a hatchaholic, but continues to plan and build coops and runs for me.
Yes you can. I would suggest a smaller LED flashlight as they have a brighter beam. And you can wrap some paper around the end and tape it so that you can set the eggs over the lens. Works very well for darker eggs. How's the hatching ladies! I hope to be joining in the fun here in the next week or so!
BLRW here I come!
Question can I use a regular flash light for candling?
