April Hatch Thread--Come Join Us!

hi, i just candled a egg with a really bright flashlight and all i can see is most of the egg is a dark shadow, with a little part of light on one of the ends. what does this mean? is the chickie dead??? i really dont know how old it is as i got the egg from a friend whos hen was already sitting on it.

Hard to know for sure, but it sounds like the chick is really close to hatching. The bright end is probably the air sac.. Put it back in the comfy incubator with lots of humidity and be patient.

Eep! I need to sit down and get caught up on this thread. I wish I had more hours in the day. Maybe I could tweak an extra bator into a time machine ... Woke up this morning to one more out - an Isbar/Americauna olive egger. Also have a pip on the one Amerauacana egg in there. Fingers crossed for a splash!

More OEs and the Marans are taking their sweet time.

Got my swap partner names for the WYSWYG April swap, and am excited to get to shopping for them. I love swaps.

Turkey eggs take about 28 days to hatch.

You're very welcome! Once you start working with it, it's very easy to remember. I don't trust my candling skills and old eyes to figure the air cell growth perfectly, but the gram scale doesn't lie. A lot of my eggs were difficult to see through, and it was very comforting to see that they were on track. If your number is high, you lower your humidity. If it's too low, you bump it up.

Congrats on all the new babies, and good luck to those still waiting.
I need to spend some time getting caught up as well. What is a WYSYWG swap? Isn't wysywg some computer thing like qwerty?
I like the picture, it makes it look like you ate up the other peeps and she's the survivor ;)
hahahahaha!!!!

I have 4 little black chicks so far still hatching ill have to put pictures up later
YEAH~ can't wait to see!

So I have a few questions for you more experienced hatchers....

I ordered 2 dozen eggs from 2 different people. I was expecting them both next week, but one came today. I only have one incubator. It has been up and running for a week getting ready. Since I only have the one incubator should I wait till the other eggs arrive and take that chance, or just set these and set again when the new ones come... what does that do for my lockdown and turning?

It seems to be holding temps pretty well so far but my next question is related to the thermometer. since it is a farm innovator, I did purchase an extra thermometer/hygrometer to set inside. It says that the temp was 110! (the one on the incubator has read 99.5 all week!) I know the thermometer that it comes with it is not accurate, but now that it is such a huge temp difference I wonder about the new digital one. I read all the instructions it came with and could not find where it says the accuracy rate. Tonight I brought a 3rd one home from my parent's place that is from a power plant thermocoupler or something. (Ha!) I didn't calibrate that one yet, but will do that in the morning. So we will see.... Any recommendations?

Good luck coahorse, I will hope for the best!
correction:caohorse lol everyone gets that wrong. i have a weird last name... its cao, and i put horse after it because i love horses. i train them in western disaplines.

thank you so much for you good luck wishes! i will keep you updated

oh, and another question, if i have early hatchers, do i separate them from the hen until the other eggs hatch? will she abandon the eggs?
