I would take the saddles off and put some pine tar on the bald patches. Chickens hate the taste, so they won't pull out any new feathers that start to grow.

How often would you put the pine tar on? I don't want their feathers all sticking together!

You wouldn't put it on the feathers. Just put it on the bald patches.
I only had to put it on twice. You should put on a new coat after about 3 days. If you notice them pecking at each other again though, you can put more on sooner.

Things are doing well since I took the saddles off my chickens. One of them has about half her feathers back and the other is growing lots of pin feathers! She still has a way to go yet. I thank you once again for all of your help and advice.

I used pine tar one time and they seem to be doing pretty well. I'm hanging onto it just in case I need it again.

It wore off, as far as I know. The instructions said it would wash off with soap and warm water, though. They never even realized it was on them.

Was it as nasty and sticky as I imagine,(not that you can read my mind-haha!).
'Pine Tar' makes me think fresh pine sap mixed with road tar.

No, it's not thick at all. It's easy to brush on with a small paint brush, but it is a little sticky once it's on. It's nothing like you're imagining.
