Can anyone tell me is it safe to use safeguard aquaSol on my 2-3 week old chicks. They are mixed in with my flock of 40 and I need to treat them all just not sure about it being safe for the babies. TIA

They are too young to have worms. I would not treat them until they are at least 2 months old. Do you know if your other grown hens have a worm problem? Do you realize that Aquasol only treats round worms, but not capillary or gapeworms? For that you need SafeGuard 10% Liquid Goat Wormer, and to give each chicken 0.23 ml per pound for 5 days in a row?

@Eggcessive -- Just curious, since Aquasol and Safeguard are both Fenbendazole, why is it that Aquasol cannot treat capillary and gapeworms? I went to Merck's site and they mention that, but of course if you look up Safeguard, since it is not indicated for poultry there is no information.

That's actually a great question. I thought it might have to do with dosage strength, but the Aquasol is 200mg/mL and the Safeguard for goats is 100mg/mL.

I'm wondering if the manufacturer only tested it on roundworms and cecal worms in chickens and therefore cannot claim that it works on any other type. That's just a guess. You could call the manufacturer and they'd probably give you more info.

Aquasol is a weaker solution and will mix with water. Because it is low dose and put in the water for 5 days, it only treats roundworms, and requires no egg withdrawal time. The Safeguard 10% fenbendazole is given orally undiluted, and will settle out in water. If given once it will only treat roundworms. But if given for 5 consecutive days, it will get round, cecal, gape, and the dangerous capillary (thread) worms. There is a 14 day egg withdrawal time.
