Does anyone have of these chickens? How have they done for you? Have they been good layers? What size eggs are you getting? How is there disposition? (Hens and Roosters)
I just ordered some from Freedom Ranger. Does anyone have any birds from there? Have any on your hens gone broody?

Thank You,
Art

The website says they are a cross of black Australorp and Rhode Island red, so not technically their own breed, more a crossbreed that the hatchery has given a specific name. You may want to ask about that specific cross to get more answers.

I have gotten various birds from Freedom Ranger Hatchery over the years and have always been very happy with them (mostly meat birds). This year we got Aquilas and they are growing nicely, very friendly, free ranging, but they stay close to the coop (which we move around). Since this is our first summer with Aquilas I’m waiting on egg production, but we’ll put the extra roosters in the freezer (they are nice roosters and one has become so friendly we’ve decided to keep him) and they are sizing up nicely. As a dual purpose breed they take longer to lay and longer to size up for the freezer, but the reduction in ticks around the property makes it worth it.

We bought Aquilas from freedom ranger this spring, so far so good, very friendly. They stay around the coop, but do forage for ticks nicely. We’re keeping 6 layers and will put the roosters in the freezer. Seems like a nice dual purpose bird, and I’ve ordered from freedom ranger for years and have always been happy with them.
