Araucana thread anyone?

I'm changing the topic a bit but I have some questions about egg size. I am getting 3 or 4 eggs a day now and I thought at first I was getting pullet eggs since these girls are all just beginning to lay except Slinky who has been laying off and on starting a couple of months ago. Anyway, I know Slinky's eggs. They're very large eggs, very. They're blue, a couple were a faded nearly grey blue color but blue. The others are blue and one is more green/blue but they're all small eggs. Not tiny but not nearly as large as Slinky's and they're all supposedly Large Fowl. Is it normal to see such a difference in size of eggs? I know I've gotten a variety of sizes when I bought LF hatching eggs but since there was such a noticeable difference I wondered if some of them may actually be bantam crosses??? They're good sized pullets so it's very confusing.

I do know that pullets lay smaller eggs for a while. It took several months for my girls to start laying bigger eggs. Now two of my girls lay huge eggs. The others ( all large fowl) lay medium eggs. Nothing like my RIR or Orpingtons. When I had bantam araucanas they laid eggs just as big as the lf araucanas.

Do your birds vary in size?


Often the size of eggs can differentiate, but not much. The only eggs I have that are noticeably much bigger are from my cuckoos. (love those girls and their huge blue eggs) But otherwise, it just takes a long time for their eggs to get bigger.

Yes, there are Araucanas out there that are part bantam, but I don't think their eggs are that much smaller.

Those buffs are georgous. I have seen a couple of buff araucana but none with that georgous glow. I didn't think I would like the color but I do.

Indeed they are. My buffs are Ameraucanas though. . . I believe Ann Charles is the only one with Buff Araucanas, or at least the only one breeding them.

I think Ann sold all her buffs. And she is the only one I know of also. I knew yours weren't araucana.

I have a nice ginger colored girl with teeny tufts but no buffs.

Well then. . . . Anyone have Wheaten Araucanas? (preferrably ones with minimal black on them) - One could work on buff Araucanas with buff Ameraucanas, though it would take time, by using Wheaten Araucanas.

You both indicate your Araucana girls lay rather large eggs. Should I assume this is in proportion to their size? I have gotten the idea this breed lays a very large egg for their size. Could you put the size in perspective so that one would know what to expect from the breed? In other words, are these eggs medium or border on med/lg? or do they actually manage a large size, as compared to store bought eggs?
