Araucana thread anyone?

Hello all,

I am new to Araucanas and was wondering if trimming their vents really helps to increase fertility and if so, how do you do it?

I recently bought this splash rooster. I was told his father came from Gary Ramey in North Carolina. His fathers name was Atlas.. his mother was one of two hens.. Oatmeal (a splash hen) or Gaia (a blue hen).

He is bilaterally tufted but they were pulled out when I picked him up. They are growing back nicely now.

Nice, another person with Gary's bird(s)!

I've never heard of the vent trimming used on Araucanas, but I do know of it used on birds that desperately need it (good quality Brahmas, etc)

I should post new pics of my 26 Gary Ramey chicks. . . They're now over 3 weeks old and almost entirely feathered in.

Hmmm, that's an interesting idea. I also only think of trimming to help with the overly feathery types, but I can't see any way that it would hurt to try. Are you having fertility troubles with this guy? He sure is lovely. I have had zero % fertility with my own bantam Araucana rooster so don't think I should continue his genetics anyhow, but it's an interesting thought. I may have to try it out just to test your idea......... Boy, your rooster really is handsome.

Wow!! Gorgeous tufts on that black girl, even though she has a tail. . . The blue seems a common thing in Gary's birds; lots of red/brown leakage. I have only two blues from him who don't have a lot of red/brown leakage, and one of them has amazing tufts!

Still, the blues with the extra color are nice. . Some even have a creamy yellow-golden color at the head, neck, and shoulders. Great for pretty egg layers, and challenging to clean up the red/brown if you want a true a true blue.

Have any of you guys seen Gary's four pullets he auctioned a while ago? Gorgeous splash and blue girls!!

I have 2 EEs in with my trio, I guess to try and encourage my other 2 hens. No luck yet. I just put 7 possible Araucana/EE eggs in my hatcher tonight.

So what is everyones idea on how long it takes a replacement cocks sperm to take over and all of the offspring will be his? 3 days? 7 days? 14? 21????????a month?

You mean for a hen to not have the previous cockerel's sperm in her, right? Because if that, it takes 3 weeks, but you can also wait 4 weeks just to be safe.

My 2 hens came from some big mint green hatching eggs that I bought last year. I was totally pleasantly surprised! I found out later that the lady I got the eggs from had a rumpless/tufted cock in with some EE hens. I think they are the right size and type.

Oh, so they're EEs. . . Wow, they look like Araucanas. They look like Gary's actually. (well the blue one does)
