Araucana thread anyone?

I definately would keep the Red bird, and Buffs are quite rare to have. I know Ann Cushing had a Buff and I had asked her about her a long time ago, she came from a White Hen I think it was from Steve Waters and a Gold Duckwing Rooster, and I think her name was Pigpen.

I think the one small hen you are selling is Duckwing or has Duckwing in her breeding.

The one chick with the odd markings I'd definately grow that one out to see what sort of pattern gene is at play, cool looking chick! Don't be too quick to cut loose of some of those odd colors, use their genetics, hope you get some solid colored birds to use from those eggs from Nancys flock.

Cool looking chicks.

The eggs from Nancy's lines are "second hand" or more since they are not straight from her flock and were from mixed colors bred together. Still, I like the idea of adding some different lines. I know they probably all originated pretty much from the same beginnings but they're at least as far as I could get from line bred. Once I have a couple of generations that are getting closer to standard, I'll be able to line breed and find out any recessives I need to know about and maybe get some type/color etc set in.

Keep us posted Cindy and let us know how many araucanas are at the show. Here is hoping you and Rob do great. Pssst! don't forget to pluck! just kidding. or am I?

So I was bad the other day. I went to TSC to get game bird chow and dog food. It was so noisy in there with all the cheeping, so I had to peek. OMG! The ducks were adorable. If I didn't have 1 already and know what a disgustingly filthy animal they are I totally would have taken some home. I love the way they cock their head to the side to look at you. I could just pinch them, they are so cute. Anyway, on to my bad. The had day old EE's ( labeled as Ameraucanas spelled correctly, tagged incorrectly) I have never seen EE's with such puffy cheeks before. So I bought six and brought them home. I picked out some colors I hadn't seen before. Lots of mottled looking chipmonks. So they are resting comfortably in my green house. I can always use more egg layers for my table eggs I sell.

Oh Lanae, how did you explain that one to your husband?

It has been actually pretty easy. The weather is soo bad here he hasn't been wandering the property and he would never go in the greenhouse because I have taken most of it over for my chickens, so , he doesn't know. He tends to look the other way as long as I don't bring them in the house and they don't affect him. Plus I am hatching chicks every week and I'm sure he wouldn't know the difference.

For now I am safe. My son wasn't even with me when I got them, so I don't have to worry about him telling on me, cause he would, the not so little rat.

I had 4 babies hatch last night. I put 12 in lockdown, and 4 others have pips. My silver duckwing eggs are giving me trouble. They make it to lock down and don't hatch. So far it looks like its going to happen this week also. ARGH!

Also the membranes in one of my hens eggs are thick and rubbery. It makes it really hard for the chicks to hatch. None of the others have that problem. Anyone else see that in their eggs? I usually end up helping the chicks from her eggs hatch. I start picking at the shell and membrane and the chicks fairly spring out and do a TA DA! cause they are ready to be out they just couldn't do more than pip.

well hopefully in 21 days i can officially join in as an aracana owner! I got my first araucana eggs this week from Lanae. Super packing job, all individually bubble wrapped, and tucked in with more bubble wrap for safe measure! I'm excited, hope that something hatches, the post office is soo rough with them! There are a couple burst air sacs, anyone ever hatch anything successfully like that?

Can others here share their experience with hatching eggs in an incubator.... shipped eggs versus non-shipped eggs, specific time of year, and type of incubator you used ? Hand turning versus auto-turner. Type of incubation used dry versus normal humidity...etc.
I plan to try an hatch some Auracana eggs soon so trying to get an some info on what would result in the best hatch rate.

Cheers,
Clint
