Araucana thread anyone?

Some days I just want to scream!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had the coolest colored chick hatch today. It was tufted. Now its dead. It was a silver and blue chipmonk color, but mostly silver with the blue being the highlights. I hope I get more. It came out of my black and gold birchen roo thats my avatar and a silver duckwing hen. When I tried the chicken calculator with those two birds, it just listed offspring as being black with gold highlights, so imagine my surprise when a silver and blue chick hatches. Has anyone else hatched a similar colored chick?

I want more.

Lanae, I am sure all of us on here would agree that it is OK to just go ahead and give a loud scream. I do know how frustrating it is to watch one of these tiny fuzz-balls with the weird little feathers sticking out of it's face to just wither away and die right before your eyes. Even more so when there is nothing in my power or knowlege to keep it from happening. I am always more surprised when they make it past a week than to find them dead. So sorry, sounds like it was a beauty! Maybe there's another lurking inside one of the other eggs. Charlie

Lanae. I once had a tufted blue duckwing hatch, then die a couple days later. I don't know what you mean by silver and blue, but mine was clearly a blue duckwing. Was yellowish w/blue stripes down the head and body.

Smoothmule - Your black hen with the markings is saying she's not pure E/E extended black. She's hiding some duckwing in there. She's basically what everyone these days is calling "birchen" - They mock Birchen very well, except the females vary, but are really just the duckwing leaking through the black.

Love the white one with the red head, I say get better photos, because I've no clue what to say, but my money's on dominant white over duckwing.

Love the buff, but she looks kind of like a duckwing x wheaten with columbian. About one allele away from Buff. Err, make that several other genes too. I'd LOVE to see some of her kids though, see how it goes!

How can you tell if a day-old chick is rumpless or not? I thought it would be obvious, but with just one out so far....I don't have anything to compare it to!

Illia, This chick was silver, like shiny grey silver, almost a white silver, with blue stripes like a chipmonk. It was so cool looking. I thought about taking a pic but it was dead, and figured it would be morbid. Next time I am taking a pic, dead or alive.

I have had silver duckwings hatch. This chick was different.

HMMM!! Not easy to tell if a chick is rumpless untill you compare it to a tailed chick. The tailed chick has a bump at the center of its rump or tailbone that a rumpless chick doesn't have, but you have to feel it in comparison to get it if you know what I mean.

I can tell a chick, rumpless vs tailed, usually by day one or day three or four. The rumpless ones will have a definite rear end on the bottom sticking out, while the top part sort of caves inward a little. The tailed ones will have the top part equal or more lengthy than the bottom, and a definite little knob where the tail bones are.

I'll get some photos next time I hatch out some.

I can tell tailed from rumpless at hatch, just not easy to explain. Once you see the difference its easy.

Sky Blue eggs auction site is jumping. Gary is now selling his birds and eggs on there, plus Ann has a couple birds for sale. I will also be posting a few birds in the next month or so. Keep the site in mind.
