Araucana thread anyone?

Wow, well done!! Do you have any other Araucanas, or is this your start? It is so exciting waiting for eggs to arrive at your door step. Hope all goes well for you.

Thanks everyone for the photo compliments - I kind of like it too

A great start to the fair experience so far. The gal who was filling out cage cards and checking the birds over for health and bugs, asked me what breed I had and when I said that I had two Araucanas, she said in a very tired voice, "Are you SURE you have Araucana, is that what you are going to call them?" I said yes, I had tried long and hard and finally had true Araucana and I was going to stick to that breed name. She sort of shrugged and wrote it on the card then walked me and my carrier over to a cage next to an Easter Egger rooster and said "Well\\, this looks like where they are putting them this year, so bring a chicken out and let me look it over." I reached in and pulled out my magnificently dbl tufted pullet and that sweet, wonderful woman exclaimed "Oh my, you DO have Araucana! Look at that! We just don't get these here. How good to see a real Araucana."
So, I'm pretty stoked so far

From what I have seen…..Everyone has to start somewhere and nobody is lucky enough to start with the perfect breeding pair. Too often it seems you end up having to breed two different colored birds together because that’s all you have or because you don’t have any tufts in that color. Then you spend generations trying to correct the color bleed through. So I have a question about the color genetics.
What colors can you mix that will not create as many issues down the road?? I understand that blue, black and splash are in the same family. Does cuckoo belong in the black family as well? Are there other colors that are related like this?
If you have a couple of options of who breeds with who?... a list of compatible colors would be so helpful. As well as a list of what would be the worst options. If there is a good thread on this already, point me in that direction. I really appreciate those of you who share your knowledge here. I looked on Amazon but could not find the book, “Araucanas for Dummies!”

I am sorta close to completion on my araucana book. Not for dummies, but lots of general info.

I have a white roo in with my cuckoo hens and am finding that to be a good match. I am getting no other color bleed thru so far and my cuckoos are turning out darker in the third generation. 1st generation = dominant white roo over blue hen and splash hen ( don't know why I got cuckoos but I did) I am getting crele cuckoos with my dominant white roo over a blue breasted red hen.

2nd generation = white roo over pale blue cuckoo hens

3rd generation = nice dark cuckoo - so far I have a beautiful dark blue cuckoo roo chick that I will put with my tufted pale blue cuckoo hens for next years 4th generation. The cuckoos out of my 2nd generation breedings are all male, so I will have to wait for the 4th generation to start seeing some nice dark girls.

Illia,

Yes, that would be lovely.

I am not going to do the chick to adult photos. Too time consuming. I am trying to make this a basic book for beginners, having stuff that I have learned till this point ( 5 years in and still very much a beginner ). I am still kicking around a few other ideas that people have mentioned they would like to see in print and be able to refer to.

any thoughts on the sex of this one? Not as much comb as i remember the other roo having, but way more attitude then either hen had, attitude is the same as the roos?
