Naughty Illia, naught!!

Of course if you ARE going to do the zipping part for the chick..... Never pull them all the way out of the shell - it can detach their little bellies from the vein before the connection has been closed off properly and that has been, in my experience.... (uhm, not that i have ever tried to help a chick out...... ) a very sad and unpleasant mistake. Sometimes when I have zipped for a chick and then left it in the shell, the shell ends up getting dried and stuck horribly to the chick, so then you have to watch to see that the little thing is for sure not going to be able to unstick itself and take the chance of washing the shell off. Hope it works out for you. It's tough sometimes knowing what to do or not do.

Exactly.

I've helped chicks out and will admit it, but, it is a very very difficult thing to do with a lot of decisions to make.

I think I will just go with my gut feeling, and leave it be...even though a piece of shell is missing, the membrane is definately still intact.
So maybe it will hatch ok...I will keep you updated. Thanks, again for the advice!

Sounds like a good idea to me - you're still early in your hatch, so you don't want to compromise the rest of the babies by fiddling and fiddling with this one egg - affecting the humidity and temp each the incubator is opened.
Oh, all this hatching talk is making me want to crank up my incubator, which would be utter madness at this particular moment in my life!!!! I will not, I will not, I will not.
But you're going to have to post picks, ndoles, of your chicks when they are out at last - I need some chick therapy asap!

lol, Megan..

I have helped a few little chicks out of their shells and some make it and some do not. The trick is if you are going to help them out of their shell is to make sure it does not dry out. If it dries out the chick will start to bleed and most of the time will die. The last one I helped was a Maran. It is also the runt of the bunch. It is about half the size of the rest of the chicks. It has been two weeks now and it looks like it may make it. It also has pastie butt. Hope it makes it to full size.

Well, I'm beginning to think that the chip missing from the one egg was just that..a chip. Possibly from rolling into the thermometer or something. No pips yet, but lots of rockin & rollin..

Hoping to have some babies sometime today...feels just like Christmas..

I have seen all but a couple of them rockin. Keeping fingers crossed for a great hatch..
