Did it take the chicks or just kill them? It always makes me so much more angry when they kill a group of chickens and just leave the dead behind. So glad that you caught the thing - way to go.

He killed one a day in my 3 month old Araucana Pen. I thought they were killing each other until I saw all the broken bones in the pen. Then I set up a Deer Cam in the pen and there he was smiling for the Camera while doing his Dirty Deeds. I am also missing two of my FBCM hens from my Maran Pen. I'm thinking he must have stole them out of the pen. There is no sign of them any where, they are just gone. Still have my trap set just incase he had some friends out there....

kec5105, yanmar1610d - So sorry to hear of that!

I hope the chick makes it!

And it looks like my Silver Duckwing cockerel is gonna prove me wrong. . . . He got his first pair of red feathers in the wings today, so, he's officially a Golden Duckwing.

I'm still super excited. I just hope he doesn't grow to have white or yellow in the breast.

My hatching eggs are in lockdown as of last night. I just checked on them, and saw one had a chip out of its' shell, but on the wrong end. The membrane wasn't broken, so I quickly put a very small piece of paper over the chip, and a small piece of tape, to cover the hole. I made sure the small end is lower than the large end, and left it in the incubator.
Did I do wrong?? Did I maybe seal the chick's doom? I did not know what else to do, as I figured it would drown if it managed to pip the wrong end.
Please tell me I didn't hurt it...

3 or 4 of the others are rockin and rolling...

You should've left it be.

I just had one a couple weeks ago who pipped on the wrong end, so what I did was tilt the egg slightly just in case, but the chick still hatched out of the bottom end and turn out just fine.

I would say pick it up, see if it still peeps - If it does, uncover the hole and watch for any progress.

Excellent advice - I've had chicks hatch out of the small end of their eggs without any assistance from me. It's not supposed to work that way, but every now and again, it does.

Good Luck with your hatch!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

If you didn't hear or feel anything I'd probably zip it if I were you (carefully open up the piphole) . . . . But I'm terrible that way.

Even if it pipped from the wrong end, all is OK because it busted through the shell, it has oxygen to breathe. Some chicks don't internally pip, they just go right to the source of air and externally pip.
