Araucana thread anyone?

Very excited, I didn't take a picture since I accidentally broke the egg (so mad about that!), but I got an Araucana egg, my first. It was definitely green, and not lightly so. I think I will try to work on egg color with my flock. Choose who has the bluest eggs, hatch only those, and replace the greener egg layers. No hatching 'til spring (since I am not a fan of winter chicks), but that is the game plan!

Glad to see more breeders, there has been a lot of new Araucana breeders since I started here. Rumbull, she's turned out lovely! Very nice laced blue and those pretty tufts.

Your rooster is cuckoo pattern, not barred. The difference is in how neat the barring is. Cuckoo is like your rooster, barring like a barred rock is precise and clean.

Lisa, I'm so glad you're so excited, you have a bit of work to do to get everything right but you sure have a lot better starter flock than I did, way to go!

Lanae, What was the down color for your chicks? was it typical for barred or cuckoo? Some of them definitely show barring but it's just different than any barring I've seen. Definitely not regular barring, must be a cuckoo pattern with something affecting the way it looks. Can Columbian wash it out that way? or could it be something else? Have you bred any to see if they breed like barred? Trying a barred looking hen to a solid rooster should tell you for certain, the chicks will be sex links.

Welsharon, good to see you post, I haven't seen your posts in a while. Got any news or photo's???

Stacykins, what all do you have now? and what are your spring plans/goals?

We really should all do some inventory of what we want and what we need and help each other out this spring. We could each make a list of what we have to share and what we're looking for. I'm we can fill everyone's wish list here. We should plan a date, maybe the first week in April, most of us should be hatching by then and can begin to sort them to swap. Rather than let all the posts get lost in the gigantic volume of posts here, I can start a new post just for that purpose, I'll try to remember then I'll post it here. It should just be for started young Araucana's or older rather than eggs, that way you are getting exactly what you asked for. I may have some adults available once I hatch more this winter so I'll know what I need to keep and what I can part with. I hope to have more tufted than I need but it may be next fall before I cull so I can evaluate type etc but I would love to help more breeders get the tufted ones they need. The clean faced rumpless chicks should be available as soon as April.

Also, there are some people who haven't posted in a while. I would love to hear from some of you out there that have been quiet lately......Miss Ya all!

Thank you for asking. I mostly lurk. I only have the three hens (rumpless and tuftless) but love them anyway. I don't really plan to breed them but just like the birds themselves and the colored eggs of course! I could be a terminal point if someone has a bird they would like to have a good home but not necessarily one fit for breeding! Mine are actually in with my o shamos. Odd pairing but they were raised together and the shamo cock was picked on by the shamo hens so he is still rather attached to the araucana hens. I enjoy reading and keeping up with you all. I will post pics soon. I would like to know what to call their colors.

Hi
Does anyone know what Colour/s you end up with if you breed a Lavender Araucana Rooster and a Black Araucana Hen ?

Is it like 50% Lavender, 50% Black or is one colour more dominant and you end up with say all Black or Lavender, or how about a Lavender with Black wings LOL

thanks in Advance

You will get all black chicks that are all carrying the recessive lavender gene. If you breed sibling to sibling, then you'll get 25% lavs. If you breed the kids back to the lavender parent, you'll get 50% lavenders.

No mixed colors, since the black is dominant to lavender.

Sorry, just using "barring" to describe the look.

They are cuckoo but I will still call them my "barred project". I would also have to work on the slow feathering gene to have true barred araucanas. I am enjoying how much I have discovered about genetics while gathering information for this little city chicken project. I love this thread and all the great people here who have a shared appreciation for this breed.
