Araucana thread anyone?

Two of my four Araucana girls have decided to go broody, and my attempt at incubating the pullet eggs I was getting have turned up no development. Ah well, at least the broodies are happy with their wooden eggs, but it would have been nice to pop incubator eggs under them late in development for some broody chick raising action!

I love the silver duckwing roo. Soo pretty.

I have found another GQF 1502 incubator and 1500 hatcher combo that I think the person is willing to sell them both to me for $900.00 and then ship them so I will call him today. When I really started looking, I was shocked at how many were out there that were used. One place had 3 1202 for $150.00 each. The were sold immediately of course, but if anyone is looking for cabinet incubators look for used.

I will let you all know how it goes. If I can't swing these two I know a lady that has the Ova Easy 380 which seems like an awesome machine, and it is local enough I can pick it up as I head to southern CA next weekend but its $ 800.00. If I can get an incubator and a hatcher for a little more than that I want them. And they are new also.

A little melanized but nice!

Love the random Jersey Giant male courtship in the background

Love the black hen's rump though. I like a good butt on my Araucanas.

I don't understand melanized. Is there someplace online with good info?
In other news, I can't wait for longer days so my hens will start laying, and I can't wait for warmer weather so I can get more chicks! I've only got 11 now, of which 2 are EE's, and 3 are roos. I have 1 rumpless hen and 1 rumpless roo. Only my EE's are laying.
ps- Illia I love your new avatar! I wish I could have a poster like that. Some of our customers can't figure out how we got our eggs to be green.

Melanized, or, melanizer, is a gene that increases the black coloration/patterning on birds. So, in a normal duckwing male where the saddle, hackle, and wing bows are bright and solid in color, but may have some black tickling on the edges (but isn't preferred in showing) the melanizer gene will increase that black til the bird looks "brassy," having a lot of black and a smaller amount of other color.

In females it is the same - It increases the black patterning.

Illia,
I cracked open an araucana egg to use the other day and it had a bullseye...these are the ones in with my shamo. I have seen him hearding them around but I guess he's been doing other things as well!
