Araucana thread anyone?

I have only had chickens for like a year now. If a hatchery sells somethin under the name aracana I can only assume that's what I'm gettin. If its not true why don't they call them EE's? It's not my fault I assume thats what they r

One reason - Money.

People have asked hatcheries to stop with the false claims or ask why they do it for years, and the most we get besides being ignored is denial. Especially in the Ameraucana vs EE sense. Slowly over time hatcheries are admitting they don't sell Araucanas, except Murray McMurray which sadly is a huge business, but still, other hatcheries deny that their "Ameraucanas" aren't true to breed either.

Think of it, if hatcheries all one day said they previously were lying and they're actually selling mutts that may lay whatever color, look like whatever (but likely bearded and yelllow skinned) - How much will they lose?

Loads of people even get their mutt stock and breed it as purebred, or show it as such, in fact sadly the smaller the poultry show the more likely even the "judges" are misinformed, which really messes things up especially if someone wants to get serious and ends up being disqualified in a real show, or looked down upon for breeding the wrong thing for years.

It is on ongoing issue and will continue to be so. There doesn't seem to be anything that can be done about it. I am sorry you didn't get real araucana chickens. Hatchery's do not sell them.

You can only get real araucanas from breeders. And they are way more expensive than getting hatchery birds but then again you get the real thing.

You are right it is not your fault. Lots of people are misled by the hatcheries. Are you planning on showing or breeding? If so then you will need to find some true araucana.

Oh no! It is definitely not your fault. As the above posters stated, the hatcheries should know the difference. It is their "business" to know the difference. Hey, that is why everyone is on BYC - to help all of us learn about the things we do not know about. Ask here and more than likely a good answer will follow.

This is day 3 and I can see an embryo from the test eggs! I did not candle all of them just a few.

I will love them all the same but I agree they totally shouldn't false advertise like that. What if I was hatching their eggs and peddling them as true araucanas. I would look really bad because I got the wrong info from a hatchery.

They r still really cute! I never plan to hatch eggs either lol!

I know that many, many, many, many people buying chickens for the first time look to the hatcheries as the Authority in the poultry world- they simply do not know where else to go. Far too few people know that there is such a thing as the Standard of Perfection. Hand in hand with our cautioning newbies on the limitations of hatcheries must go the introduction of the Standard. They are right to think that there is a place to go for information on the breeds - it's just not quite where they had assumed, but it's not hard to find information on the Standard of Perfection and proceed forward from there.
