Araucana thread anyone?

It is official. I love Araucanas. They seem to make good broodies and moms. I have a broody team. They only have three chicks. They were sitting on pullet eggs. They teamed up to sit on the eggs and are now taking care of the babies together. Such great birds.

Yep! Mine are always super moms, excelling anyone else. Sadly the Shamo too, as it took several chicks being stolen by a cat before she actually started attacking potential threats.

Got loads of chicks hatching today but not the Araucana yet. . . . Still got 20 more chicks to go.

poularde, that is awesome! I am just learning the awesomeness of broody Araucanas. My girl (who I thought went unbroody right before hatch, then went broody again) has two olive eggers and one duckling that I popped under her after they dried off in the incubator. She is doing SUCH a good job as a first time mom!

We have had a TON of these colors hatch lately. Can you please help me identify what they might end up as. Would these be lavendar, grey, blue, cuckoo or all of the above :)

I see some blue cuckoo, esp. the bottom photo, the top photo I see also on the right the tufted gorgeous chick looks like a splash duckwing or something. Absolutely beautiful chick!

I mostly see cuckoos though, except also for the yellow one on the left top, looks like a splash, wheaten, white, or other relative color.

Very cool. Two of the hens are bluish cuckoo and the Roo is Birchen so that makes sense. Just trying to identify everything going forward. I am trying to keep all the APA Varieties.

Then I'd say your hens have recessive duckwing going on, and they're splash, so you've got all blues there and the duckwing looking one is probably a very light blue.

Also, you've got a LOT of boys

How can you tell the boys at that age are you looking at that bump/spur or the feathering? These range in ages from 3 day old to 2 week old.

Because the hen used is cuckoo (barred) and breeding her to a non-barred makes sex-linked offspring.

And also, barred/cuckoo chicks can be sexed at birth. All those boys are not only sex-linked results but I can also see the large white blob on the head, rather smeared down the neck, an indicative sign of a male.

Oh very cool! Thank you for that info as that makes my job easier. :) I actually pulled the more "solid" colored chicks out, to keep, thinking that they were darker more solid colors when in fact those may be female.

I really love this Araucana forum because you guys are so knowledgeable.
