Araucana thread anyone?

I hear you talking about bad Araucana mommies... If I have an Araucana go broody on what seems to be fertile eggs, would putting her in her own little A-frame coop with the eggs and chicks (so she can't ignore them or leave them) work, as in, make her be a good mother? Forgive me if this is a dumb question to the rest of you... I guess my question is if I isolate her, will it lessen the chances of leaving her kids in the car while she goes to the casino?

Araucanas - Broody machines!! People say Silkies and Cochins are the broodiest but that's just because they're all people know of, considering all other hatchery stock the broodiness is bred out. Very few people have Araucanas, so very few know of their super broodiness. It's irritating yes, if you want more eggs.

The blue youngin shown earlier looks like a pullet to me. Way too small of comb with that much feather development, no male feathers or coloration seen so far, had a pullet (have actually) that was also kinda convincing but was indeed a pullet, not a cockerel.

Cute chicks! The second one shown is a blue cuckoo cockerel.

My Araucanas have yet to be terrible moms.

The best broodies I had were Gary Ramey birds. Also the most irritating.

I would recommend isolating your broody hen that way at least if she leaves the kids in the car, the baddies won't kidnap them and bury them in the back yard when she is playing slots. Gross I know.

Last year, none of mine were broody all spring but then about mid summer, they all went broody. That's an excellent time to buy hatching eggs unless you have a load to set of your own. I let mine set them for 10 - 14 days then take those out and put them in the incubator to finish and hatch and give them a new batch to set. I repeat this up to 3 batches if they're good hens and will come off the nest to eat and drink. They give them the best start but I prefer to raise the chicks myself. Love the broodies here.

My two ladies are broody now. They raised their first chicks in February. I put them in a tractor last night with some eggs I would like them to hatch.

Thank you for the replies about my chick.
coberdor it is one of yours. I think you posted a pic of the mom. They even have the same tuft.

cashdl the bird is ten weeks.
Illia I think you are right. I keep hoping it is a cockerel. I could use a blue tufted cockerel. I have a clean faced blue cockerel that my broodies hatched. He does not have any leakage yet. Maybe I will be able to pair them up. I had not planned on keeping him. He is a wild man and I can not really handle him. He acts like I am killing him. Boys are such screamers.
Looks like the only cockerel out of this batch is clean faced. All the pullets have tufts. Go figure. Guess that is how it works. I am still very happy to have tufts.

Comb difference with my two. One definite cockerel!

Very excited here all my eggs arrived yesterday! Got some from Gary too! And........by mid next week my Colloncas should be hatching! They are going to be spoiled and hope some will be future breeding hens!

You got one of my red pyle hen's chick. I'm jealous. I've never hatched a chick from her. It seems to go to all my eggs that I sell. She must go on strike when I hatch my own. It looks to be a cockeryl too.

I am sure he is a cockerel. I love him. He is my favorite bird ever. His name is Precious. ( I never thought I would name a bird that.) I will definitely be keeping him. Thank you so much for him.

He is the sweetest. He loves to be snuggled and makes all kind of cooing noises to me. He always wants me to hold him for a bit.

I really need some help determining if this bird is a rooster or a pullet. My roosters found a home and will be leaving at 6:30 tonight so I need some guidance. Please let me know what you think and how sure you are about your educated guess . Also what is the color? THANKS!
