Araucana thread anyone?

Me neither. I bought eggs and this is what I am getting from the parents. The parents look lavender but I can see the leakage that everyone claims is from the sun, in the roo. So this is his prodigy. I have hatched over 100 eggs from this pen and I do have 1 that looks lavender now but had that porcelain look as a chick.

Is it possible that one of your birds is Blue and the other Lavender? In that case you would be getting birds that look black, however when you breed the offspring back to the lavender parent you should get lavender chicks.

Debi, one of the boys I hatched from you is coloring up exactly like that! It's wild and crazy looking and I just love it. I may've gotten 90% boys out of my hatch but they're *gorgeous* boys!

They are Lavender. I can't figure it out. I have black hens in the pen now and I will be setting their eggs soon to see what I get. Then I have a Black roo I am going to put on the Lavender hens and see what I get.
I also have a clean faced Lavender Ameraucana roo and may use him to start over.
Araucanas have been mixed for so many years it is hard to 'straighten them out'.

These all hatched from lavender eggs. I think what they have is 1 copy of Lavender and 1 copy of duckwing.

If you are breeding from two lavender birds you will hatch all lavender chicks.

The gene is recessive. So lv/lv X lv/lv = 100% lv

However if one of your birds is lv/lv and the other is lv/something else then you would have a 50% of lavender and a 100% chance of splits (birds carrying the lavender gene but not showing the color)

There is also the chance the one of the birds you thinks "looks like" lavender could be something else, in which case you are breeding:
lv/lv X ?/? = 100% carrying the gene but none showing it.

If one of your birds is a split and one is lavender then you might just be loosing on the genetic lotto and only got one lavender chick. I would breed all those odd looking birds together and see what you get.

I know 2 copies of lavender is supposed to be dominant, but if the other copies are wild type

Two copies of lavender are not dominant. The gene is recessive. Two copies are needed for the gene to be expressed, so if your birds only have one copy, then you would not see it expressed. I am betting that is what is happening, which means you have a bird that is not lavender. Post pics?

I will try to post pics tomorrow. The birds are lavender but as I said the roo has that straw look in all the right places for a duckwing. Very faded straw. Most discussions claim it to be from the sun. I think duckwing is in there. I have to leave now. Shame I am enjoying this conversation. Have a good night.
