Araucana thread anyone?

Hi Vickie,

I have both the GQF Incubation set up and the Dickies Incubation set up. I just got the GQF last weekend so don't know what my hatch rate in them with be, but in the Dickies it has been running about 80 to 90%. I have heard good things about the Brinsea products.

Just wanted to share my main man this year. I have no idea what color he is or has in him. The bottom of his feet are pale yellow. I thought I would try him over a hen I have who's legs are way too yellow. I really like this guy.

He is a buff Columbian with silver. That's my guess. He most likely is split for white skin. As you know araucana need to be yellow skinned, so there is no such thing as too yellow of legs unless they are supposed to be willow, then they would be missing the dermal melanin.

Very nice. He has a lovely small comb.

Thank you Lanae. I can see the Buff Colombian now. I wonder if he might be a splash instead of silver. Some of his feathers are very blue and almost spotted like a splash.

I am so excited. Have to go look up pics of buff Colombian chicks.

hi puddinFluff....your hens are real nice looking....i'm curious about hatching eggs....there is a teacher in my district who hatches eggs in her elementary classroom...so i was thinking i would get ahold of some blue hatching eggs and see if i can get some hens that will lay blue eggs....how many eggs did you incubate to hatch out those three???? i'm just wondering what the odds are...i know it is a very exacting science.

Araucana's are notorious for not being good at fertilization. We started with 12 eggs and hatched two. When I candled at 8 days we culled about half for lack of development (i.e. being infertile). Where are you located? If you simply want colored eggs, there are probably other breeds that would give you a better hatch rate. Ours came from the U. of Arkansas Poultry Science Department and I am sorry to say, they no longer have their Araucanas. They do have a new breed of blue egg layers however and they are very generous with their eggs to 4-H and any education endeavors. The catch is someone has to go get them.

Splash only affects the black color. A bird will either be gold or silver, your boy is silver. I am saying silver because of the light color in the hackle. If he was gold then his hackle would be red. Now the splash could be affecting any black that could be present in the hackle for the affect of the Columbian gene removing the black from the rest of the body but unless they have two doses, there will still be some black in the hackle for the splash to mess with if that makes sense.

Thanks Lanae.

Anyone looking to buy a duckwing cockerel? I have one that is clean faced/rumpless for $25 plus shipping. Nice dark green legs. He's still a baby so it will be late spring or early summer before he's old enough to breed. He's just beginning to grow in his big boy saddle hackles. He has a lot of maturing to do and will only get nicer. I don't have any duckwing hens or I'd keep him. PM me with any offers
