Araucana thread anyone?

Okay now I have to ask -- how do you know if it's an EE? I went to "Chick Day" at a nearby farm and walked away with three "Araucanas" and two Buff Orpingtons. I've read a lot things about how tons of places sell chicks as Araucanas but they actually aren't. What's the difference between them and EE's? The coloring of the hen in this picture is a heck of a lot like mine.
The first website to always look at to see if your bird is an Araucana or not is www.araucana.net which is the website for the Araucana Club of America. The pictured bird you are wondering about how to tell it is an EE is an EE. First because it have muffs on its cheeks instead of tufts, add that to the fact that it has a tail and the feather color is based on EB or Brown which is not only not an approved Araucana color, it also is a color that is not even in the genetics of araucana.

Another great website to look as is mine ( yes shameless promotion) www.cashsblueeggs.com I have tons of excellent and some not so excellent pictures of my araucana. I also have a page dedicated to the differences in what is an Araucana, Ameraucana and , EE.

We've wanted to add some Araucanas for a couple of years, finally 2 weeks ago we hatched out
4. We had some issues with them from the start sticky butts/constipation, but we nursed them
through a tough week. 3 are rumpless, 2 have tuffs. The yellow chick is a midget white turkey poult that hatched around the same time. Pictures aren't that great, Will take some better photos
once they start getting some nicer feathering.

An Ameraucana is the same as an Araucana but has a tail.

When you cross two colours of Araucana, eg Lavender and Black, it make a splash. Still Pure.

Niether of these are true,
Ameraucanas are a different breed, not just tailed Araucanas. They have beards(muffs), not tufts, they are also different sizes, annd have other slight differences

When you breed Lavendar(Self Blue) to black, you get all black split for lavendar. Lavendar is a recessive gene, so both parents must have a copy for the chick to show it.
I think you mean blue, but blue to black will not get you any splash either.
Blue x Black = 50% blue, 50% black
Blue x Blue = 50% Blue, 25% splash, 25% black
Splash x Blue = 50% splash, 50% blue
Splash x Splash = 100% Splash
Black x Splash = 100% blue
Black x Black = 100% black

Yes sorry. I didn't mean that the Araucana and the Ameraucana were the same. Sorry.

And that was just an example I didn't know the whole gene thing. Was just staying the offspring would still be pure.

Love the markings on the tailed chick.

They all look unique, can't wait to see what their colors look like as they get older.
In regards to having a tail or rumpless, if we were to breed is it true that we should not breed the tailed bird...I know you can breed cleaned faced
to tufted.

This gigantamongo chick was sold as an Araucana. It is almost 6 weeks old, as are the other chicks in the picture (a couple gold laced cochins, a silkie and a silver sebright cockerel). It is rumpless, appears to have a peacomb, doesnt seem to have much, if any, tuffs. Is it a true Araucana? And, what color is it? I have never had a chick of any bread with this coloring. She is white and tan/grey/brown. She is HUGE and rather a bully to her "sisters". She will actually stomp them with her giant feet. And she is not at all friendly and hates to be handled.

He probably has some Cochin in him. And, I bet you he will develop tail feathers later. My young roo just started getting a tail and he is over two months old! I was wondering if he was ever going to grow a tail. And he is not an Araucana!
