Araucana thread anyone?

Does anyone else have issues with their rumpless Araucanas getting poop stuck to their feathers? I have two araucanas and one random rumpless hen. One of the Araucanas and the other rumpless constantly soil their feathers. Today I had to give them both a "feather cut" and clean up quite a bit of soiled feathers around their vents. None of my other hens have this problem. Is their anything I can do besides cutting the feathers off?

Aloha,

I have one like that. I tried to use scissors but I ended up plucking the balls with a quick jerk. She actually didnʻt even flinch. She still has poo all over there. Sheʻs also not very healthy, just trying to hang on. I donʻt think she lays eggs.

I think she has a short vertebrate. Does yours have a short vertebrate?

Aloha, Puhi

I'm really not sure about the vertebrae. She was laying really well and I actually hatched some eggs from her. Then I gave some eggs to a friend to hatch and they weren't fertile anymore. Now she is only laying twice a week instead of everyday. She seems healthy otherwise, but obviously her dirty butt is preventing the rooster from doing his job and something is decreasing her egg laying. I will keep an eye on her in the future.

Hi there. You can clean her vent with triple antibiotic cream and Luke warm water flowing over the vent. First I put cream on her vent the oils seam to dissolve it or loosen it up then the warn water runs over it till it's removed or repeat if needed Don't rub it to much or she will lose down feathers. Once she's cleaned up put triple cream on it and no more crusty vent. The cream keeps it from sticking on her tail feathers. Then you may have to change feed brands may help her. Bragg's Apple cider vinegar in their water 1 oz per galon for a probiotic. Grit helps a lot also little mixed in food or for scratch. Hopefully that will get her back on path to being happy and laying again. Good Cluck in the future.

I am on the verge of setting Araucana and would love any feedback as I have not researched fully just how hard these are to hatch out healthy happy chicks...
My Easter 'present', so I need a 3 week crash course!
TIA

Hey guys!

Forgive me the newbie question, but I was hoping for some clarification:

Is the Araucana the same as an Ameraucana? I'm guessing they both refer to the same breed, and are interchangeable depending on region/dialect - is that a fair assessment?

Thanks for the info!

Ameraucana - lays blue eggs, has pea comb, beard and muffs under the eyes. Also has a tail. Does not have tufts.

Araucana - lays blue eggs, has a pea comb, is tailless/rumpless, feather tufts are desirable but sometimes absent. Does not have a beard or muffs. Often a stockier bird than the Ameraucana.

That is the North Americana standard. Europe and Australia have their own breed standards.
