Araucana thread anyone?

Both of my splash hens are that color, but only this one has tufts.

My two splash chicks are going to be more creme with a few spots it looks like.

I am waiting to see what color comes out of my blue pen. I believe you get 50% splash with two blue parents so we shall see what their color will be.

Wendy'sChicksRock :

is it true that a good way to tell if you have a real Araucana is by the feet? Im not too sure what I have, I was told by my good friend who has had chickens her whole life (and she is 65) that my hen was the Araucana, she gave me one as a gift. Im new to this so dont bite my head off ok... Ill post some pics. She is about 18 weeks old,has green/olive leggs ( bottoms are yellow) no tail and tuffed cheeks. She said she will lay blue eggs. what do you all think... I dont mind either was cuz she is so sweet i just want to call her by her right name.. ok here goes..https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/65029_img_20100914_1221351.jpg

Yup, a delightful easter egger there. Nice rich color and very special eyes; here's to hoping for nice blue or green eggs for you. There is a wonderful easter egger thread here https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=273489&p=1. I believe that for a long while blue egg layers were called Araucanas and it was only more recently that the different breed specifics have been hashed out and distinctions made between Ameraucana and Araucana, so I suspect that is why your friend calls these Araucanas. Have fun!

I am breeding LF. I do have a clean faced Bantam roo who neck I am going to ring. He starts crowing at 3:30 a.m. and goes untill the others start at 6:00. I hate him.

But other than the roo from you know where, everything I have is Large Fowl.

Finally got some photos!!

But, sadly, I just so happened to have lost my Splash pullet tonight. I tried looking for her to get a photo, and she wasn't anywhere. I've already lost a Blue Wheaten Marans a few days ago, which I was just hoping is broody, but now her. . . REALLY hope this isn't a predator problem.

Anyway, here's my Splash cockerel, Canis. He's getting pasty-butt all of the sudden, which I'm going to treat, but otherwise his most prized feature are his perfectly symmetrical and balanced tufts.

Next, here's a head shot of my Blue Cuckoo cockerel, who as you can see, has a lot of gold leakage that is diluting his barring. Really want some barred Araucanas to improve him with. I've got a blue and splash cuckoo, but they're from the same gold leaked lines as him.

Splash Cuckoo cockerel - for sale. He's got gorgeous tufts, though slightly unbalanced, but I've already got a blue cuckoo, and right now will just leave room for one Araucana male per color.

Not sure what to call this color, but it is gorgeous!! He's got red, gold, and blue - Also note, his feet are red, yellow, and black. Never seen such color. You can't see the red - but mainly his webbing has it. (also tryin' to get rid of him, as he is clean faced)

Last - The eggs! These are a series of eggs collected from one pullet of each color, from their first day til fourth day. The 3rd column is from my Blue Cuckoo, and the 5th is from my "Lemon Blue." The rest, but for the second row, are NOT blue enough for me, and will not be bred - Except for Olive Eggers.

More photos tomorrow. . . Need to get some of the pullets as well as my prized "Lemon Blue" cockerel, who looks a lot like your yellow and blue spotted one, cashdl.

Illia,

I was reading about lemon blue cochins somewhere on here and several pics were posted of other breeds of what is considered lemon blue and your red, blue, gold roo looks like those pics. Some people have called it blue wheaten I noticed also. My banty roo I hate look like your red, blue, gold roo only mine has no gold his saddle and hackles are red.

I consider lemon blue when the wing bar, hackles, and saddle is gold. Everything else is blue. I love love love that coloration in the roos. Not so much in the girls. I have a lemon blue araucana pullet. She is sweet but doesn't float my boat so to speak.

Don't you have a lemon blue roo?

So sorry to hear about your pullet. I hope it is not a predator problem also

The red/blue guy here I wouldn't classify as anything, really. Blue Wheaten is this:

I do indeed have a "Lemon Blue" cockerel, I'll post photos of him tomorrow. Technically I don't think they are Lemon Blue, I just call them so because mine remind me of LB Cochins.

Hi there
I dont want to hijack this thread. I just want to know how do you clear up pasty butts.?What kind of birds do you have that lay those nice dark brown eggs in your avator.?

The beautiful brown eggs are from my Black Copper and Blue Wheaten Marans.

As for pasty butt - It often a problem in Araucanas that cannot truly be solved except to breed it out, but I trim vent feathers to prevent the poo from sticking to the feathers. It works for quite a good time, if not until the bird molts again.
