Araucana thread anyone?

That's a very handsome rooster Illia! Congratulations on adding him to your breeding program.

Illia,
I had the barreds back in the 1980's. You will have no problem breeding them since they are sex linked. You could also use a black double tufted rumpless hen with him which may or may not clear up the gold leakage. He may have what is called "crow wing" since his wings are pure black on the ends like that. When he is bred with a black hen and if he is double gened barred you will get all barred chicks. If single barred you will get 1/2 barred chicks. The legs of a barred male will never be pure green/dark (unless you have an unique mutation that has not been seen yet) so you must be shooting for yellow legs, is that correct?

I know blacks will really work wonders, but I don't have any. I have a black hen, clean faced, with duckwing gold leakage. That's all.

Yes, I'm shooting for yellow legs. I've yet to ever see willow legged barred Araucanas, and all mine are yellow legged, so, it's fine. They all have yellow skin and that's what truly counts.

Illia,
SOOO cool !

You really need to get that variety going so they can be approved for show, stunning rooster there.

I've produced some sex linked, barred, black roosters from my Maran hens and Araucana roosters and they are gorgeous, all rumpless and clean faced. My friend Yana has them now.

So I wanted to be done hatching by the end of this month. sigh! I couldn't stop myself. Since I was worming everyone, I decided to set all my EE eggs who are with my marans roo, ( I wasn't going to do it till spring. ) and all my RIR and EE's that are with my Araucana roo. I figured I need to replenish my egg laying flock for the farmers market anyway, so if I hatch next month they will be laying by mid spring.

Course since I was setting all those other eggs I might as well continue setting the araucana eggs. Fortunately I have the space for new pens, and a nice green house to keep the chicks in this winter. My husband was looking forward to getting the incubator out of the kitchen soon. Course I havn't told him yet. Maybe he won't notice its still there.

I have splash Araucana hatching right now. The first one must be a roo chick it has huge feet and legs, it is clean faced and doesn't look rumpless, drat its tailed hide. Hatching baby chicks never gets old. I can't wait to see what the others are. Last week I had duckwing and bbrs hatching. This week splashs and on Sunday eggs from my blue pen are due to hatch.

Maybe you can convince your husband that this is the same hatch as before...... He's just beginning to slur them all together in his mind? I'm very much looking forward to seeing what comes out of your blue pen.
I'm absolutely desperate at this point for large fowl blue Araucana breeding stock. I have banty hens and keep almost getting roos to start a banty program, but really, I long to breed large fowl, even though they are not accepted.

Hi Megan,

I just sold a beautiful double tufted blue pullet. I still have the double tufted blue roo, but am thinking about keeping him. He has gold leakage on his wings and I think it is going to turn out beautiful. I can't wait. I will let you know what hatches.

Is that the pullet I was going to buy from you but backed out of? You have no idea how many times I've kicked myself for that. Honestly, what was I thinking?
