Araucana thread anyone?

I haven't figured out how to post pictures here yet. Need to have my teenager help me. This male is a result of a mating between a top quality true black araucana bantam bred by Steve Waters and a white of mine which had truly magnificent tufts but broke my heart when he developed some red in his hackle at about 4 months. He in turn was also a black/white cross. I am trying to develop good whites with excellent yellow legs but keep getting red showing up as my original whites were purchased from a breeder who was not interested in breeding for color- only type. I like to win, so color is important. I merely offer him to someone who was working in another color where the red would not be the kiss of death it is for true black or white.

Have you bred your White Hen to another color of Rooster to see what colors she is hiding behind the White? Whites can hide Pattern Genes also. I only have one pure Black Hen left that is clean faced and has an extended tail Folicle left, I had 2 at one time and did manage at one point to get a totally Black Roo that was rumpless with double tufts, twice in my breedings, I'll have to try again this summer with mixing my matings again to see if I can get another, lost both to dog attacks last year and only have the one Black Hen left to work with, and never had a Black Rooster to work with, I was shocked both times when I got Black from my Matings.

my white roo with slate legs (sold him Saturday, have to many roo's) throw the reds and birchen. Flame & Frost are from Daddy Roo & Blackie my Black Hen
WildChild is from Daddy Roo & Blue my tailed lavander hen

I just received my membership package from the Araucana club of America. WHY DIDN'T I JOIN THIS CLUB TWO YEARS AGO???????? They sent the most informative, basic, interesting information on this breed that I have every seen! I was waiting to join until I had some breedable Araucana stock, and of course that seemingly simple goal was a long time in achieving. With the basic guidelines in the package I received today, I would have had a much clearer understanding of what I was after a whole lot sooner and I'm convinced that the whole process would have gone significantly smoother.
If you don't hear from me for a while, it's safe to assume that I'm locked in my bedroom soaking up all the yummy info. (In between greasing combs, making hot peppery mashes, and trying to scrape frozen chicken poop off of coop floors.)

cackleberry,
I'm a member too, I joined in an effort to learn more and to let other breeders know I was serious about the breed. They are still so rare that it does make sense to protect the gene pool by trying to sell to other breeders at this time.
Make sure and sign up for the forum at the Araucana Club website too

Oh, I have learned so much from that forum and many, many times I have longed to jump in with a question. I'm absolutely looking forward to signing up.

It's not a real busy group but usually someone will answer questions. Where are you from? There is the big show in Dec. in Shawnee, Oklahoma. I'm thinking I'll be able to go. Nothing to show, especially a show of this caliber, but definitely a great place to learn

Good Going! Be sure to keep your egg shade card, I have mine somewhere.

Jocelyn is a really good one to ask question to about breedings for colors and rumplessness. She also does sexing by the eye stripe of day olds be sure and get pictures of your day olds with the eye stripes and run them by her.
