Ohhh, you did make a good find!

Medical Question and off topic for the Araucana Breed

Thought I'd ask here though, as someone else may have had this happen to a bird and this is the first time I've had this happen.

Today I let my Crele Penedesencas out inside, I've done this before with alot of my birds Araucanas included and have never had anything happen to any of them, I don't have the other coop up yet outside and that won't happen until I get thru Winter so several of my other breeds are caged or toted inside for the winter and my Crele Penedesenca pair is one of them. I had them out for about 2 hours and then decided to put them up, this was their first time out, I caught the cockrel and put him in the tote, the pullet was harder to get caught but I finally got her caught and put her in the tote, a few minutes later I started to do something else and looked at my hand and saw blood on my fingernail, so I went back to the Penedesencas tote and looked them over real good, I pulled the pullet back out and saw blood that was drying on her back toenail, so I took her to the sink and ran warm water and washed the toe off to discover the toenail was gone, I dried the area and then got my Quik Stop out and put that all over the toe and help her for quite a while to make sure the blood had coagulated and then put her back in the tote with the Cockrel and I'm getting ready to check her again to make 100 percent sure there is no bleeding. She walking around fine, my concern is Staph or Staph Areous infection and thought it best to ask others if there is anything else other than changing the bedding that I should do to make sure I don't have an issue later with this pullet, I only have one pullet and one cockrel and they are extremely hard to come by, so any information would be greatly appreciated. And sorry sort of off topic, I just thought maybe someone else has dealt with something like this happening to one of their birds and would be best to advise me.

Sorry your bird has injured herself. Sounds like you've done great handling it so far. I've had birds loose nails a number of times and so far it's never turned into anything more and I have never done anything too fancy in treating them. Just, of course, watch that the cock doesn't decide to start pecking at the bloody area....... Poor dear, but I bet she would tell you it was worth it to get a little play time.

This was their first time being loose outside of a cage or tote, I took the top off and they just stood there waiting for me to put water or feed in, so I thought what the heck I'll see how they do outside of the tote and picked the cockrel up first and put him down and then picked the pullet up next and let her out, never dreamed of something like this happening, they stayed within 8 to 10 foot of the tote and I put their water out and some feed out on the floor and they ate and walked around visiting all of the other cages birds were in, was a little shy when I walked past them several times but thought it good to get them used to me being close and was fine until I decided after 2 hours to put them up. I was just shocked when I didn't see a toenail and wasn't sure exactly what to do, so I appoligize for posting off topic, just thought maybe someone with Araucanas also had this happen and would know how to best advise me. I don't even have any antibiotics that would really apply to this sort of an Injury, I know Peroxide will should only be used once and then after that to use Saline Solution. So thought it best to ask others.

Thanks

Victoria

Pokey,

They do look alike. Mine has a smoky grey hackel and all of her other feathers are laced in light grey.

So when I go to the chicken calculator what do I put her down as...white or splash?

Splash.

An interesting note, too. . .

If you look at other "blue cuckoo" colored birds, they have just as poor of barring. I think it isn't the barring to blame, but the blue which smudges things together. For one, I've yet to see anyone here breed for and produce a normal barred Araucana yet.

Here's some blue barred Wyandottes - Their barring is identical to my blue barred Araucanas, minus of course the gold leakage.

And, here's a normally barred Araucana. I don't know if this guy came from BBS cuckoo breeding, but I'm pretty sure of it. He is in WA state, and there are no other barred Araucanas in WA besides the normal blue and splash cuckoo ones. Notice, this guy is a normal black barring. . . And really nice barring.

I can't wait to see if mine will turn out like him.

Also, I was REALLY close to purchasing this guy, too, but. . . I didn't get to.

Illia,

I saw a picture of Gary Rameys bird once that had the barring, he looked almost like a Crele in color, he was young in the picture when I saw the bird.

Ann Charles had several of them, and she sold all of them, I have a picture stored on my Computer of one of the Bantam Pullets she had put up for Auction on Eggbid, I also contacted the party that got the pullet and tried to convince the woman to sell me the pullet and she wouldn't, I then tried talking her into hatching eggs out of her, I emailed her in the spring and the pullet died of Prolapse and she had no idea which eggs were hers, she noticed she wasn't getting certain eggs and had some in the refrigerator, so she tried hatching those and I think she got 4 chicks, all 4 chicks was solid in color, so all 4 was pullets, only the cockrel would have been barred, which was what I was looking for, so I missed out on that.

Shame you couldn't have got that Roo, if you know who has him I'd contact them and see if they will breed him to Black Hen, the barring is sex linked, so you could see if you could get something out of him.

Email me [email protected] and I'll show you the pictures of the Barred Pullet Ann sold on Eggbid, I don't think I'm allowed to post it here as it wasn't my photo.

Illia,

mine does look like yours. And you're calling yours a splash cuckoo. What kind of mating did yours come out of?

How do I put "splash cuckoo" in the calculator?

I don't have any cuckoo birds, so I never even thought about splash cuckoo.
I'll have to look into that cuckoo stuff.

Thank you,
Nate
