Thanks:). They were in the mail for a little less than two days. Lanae (clever lady) put apples in with them. They seemed bright-eyed when I opened the box. And they let me handle them without much fuss, although they seemed happy to get into their coop and get access to the warm sun.

The coop is portable, so I think I'll move it into the workshop tonight and give them a lamp (per cashdl's suggestion) for extra warmth. My Storey guide to chickens has a recipe for electrolyte water; I think it couldn't hurt to offer some.

Gosh, they're pretty. These birds are the best kept secret in chickendom.

ETA: I really want them to reproduce the old-fashioned way. In other words, I am determined not to get into incubators. I can't spare the time or $$ right now, though maybe in 10 years when my children could take a more active part. SO if these three are good mamas and daddy, all the better. There's a nice gal in RI who keeps Araucanas, and I think maybe a chick swap could be beneficial to us both in the future. But as far as getting aggressive about perfection....I think that's not for me. Let's just hope I don't make them worse...haha.

I Agree! It is no more expensive to pay the price for a good trio and much more reliable than hatching shipped eggs. Not that it can't be done but many of us can attest the the difficulty in getting a start, not to mention being able to expect your own hatching eggs sooner. I can't wait for next year now to see what all of our chicks this year look like

I am so happy they arrived safe and sound. I am such a worry wort when I ship them. Thank you for emailing me so quickly when they arrived.

Araucana are the most enjoyable birds to watch run around the yard. Their funny little rumpless behinds. They are excellant foragers, and they sing about each new bug or juicy bit they find. It is adorable.

Quirky,
Congrats on your new guys, you're gonna love them and I'm so happy to know there are more and more breeders out there. Didn't seem to be the case a couple of years ago,

Here are a few of my latest chicks. Anyone that can help with the colors is welcome to. I can figure out the black and blue chicks, lol but there are some colors that are really interesting too and I can guess but I'm anxious to see them with some feathering. I have 3 tufted/rumpless black chicks now, two have single tufts and one is double tufted. Of the blue chicks, one is single tufted and one double tufted, all rumpless. I'm still waiting on my first tufted white chick and just put 8 eggs in the hatcher, to hatch this weekend so my fingers are crossed. There are several clean faced blacks, another blue, several yellow variations and more brown. One is silvery looking that is silver with yellow that I figure may be a pale blue like Luvdove.

Congrats Cathy, and congrats Lucy.

I love all your photos.

I put 13 eggs into incubator 6 have hatched so far ( all on their own with no help from me ) 5 more are in the process of hatching ( I will try my best to be patient and not help ) 2 are not doing anything yet, but today is day 21 so I will give them a little time before I crack the eggs open. From my blue pen I have my first double tufted splash. I have a black and a golden duckwingish from my birchen pen, the rest are duckwingish from my dom. white pen and my ginger pen.

I was thrilled to have this many to set. I have been selling eggs like crazy and not able to set more than 2 or three for myself. Last weekend I didn't set any for myself. This weekend, all I will have to set is eggs from my pink egg laying araucana hen. Thankfully I get alot of tufted from her. I am eagerly awaiting to see what color eggs that her offspring lay. She is my second pink egg layer from blue egg gene parents. Kinda a mystery, but am interested to see how easy it is to bring the blue gene back into the mix.
