Araucana thread anyone?

Well, Speaking of Araucana's and chicks.......

I snuck my 4 11 wk old araucana's in the coop last night after dark, went out at 6am to let them out and the backsides/vent area is almost bald on two of them!!! Who would of thought in the maybe 30-45 mins of daylight the big-n-s would pick on them that much!!!

Thank goodness I only put the clean faced out b/c I fear if they were tufted they would have no tufts left

Illia,
So glad you're back and getting knee deep in chicks!

Congrats on the hatches. I've got more than 2 dozen chicks right now and almost that many due to hatch next week.

Beth,
I've run into that with only one youngster and it would be my lovely buff Lucy. She just gets beat up every time I try poor spoiled girl. I may have to wait till she's older and put her with a younger roo and keep them penned if I can't keep her safe.

Anyone interested in some hatching eggs? I have 2 dozen that I can have incubated for me but I thought I'd offer again before they go into an incubator.

Oooh, would these be related to Spot? I've got him in with his new girls, he's very happy. I put a broody hen in with him while I situated some pens and he was such a good daddy. He just talked and brought food and dropped it in front of the chicks. Really cute how good he was with them.

How much would they be? Let me know, I can paypal you. If you ship soon, they'd be here before the weekend.

It's been really busy here. Got 2 dozen to move to the hatcher this weekend and bought a couple dozen from Jody. I also sent 3 dozen to a friend a couple hours away to incubate and split the chicks. Sold a couple dozen and just picked up a dozen locally that are from the same guy I bought some of my young adults from and I picked up 11 tonight. I am definitely up to my nose in eggs but they have slowed a little and I have one black hen setting a dozen. I will be buying a large incubator this fall. I almost have enough in my paypal account to buy a used one now.

So, I was told if I wanted to start a small flock of Araucana then it would have to be bantam birds... because we "just don't have the space here in the city for another LF breed."

I think that comment was suppose to deter me from adding more birds... but if it's got to be bantams, then bantams it will be!

I don't see much posted about the bantam variety, does anyone raise them?

Where did you get your stock? What colors are you breeding?

For those who've raised Araucana for years, where could I find bantam hatching eggs or chicks?

What a stupid thing to say to a chicken addict - a bit like waving the red flag......

My experience has been that finding bantam Araucana is far easier than finding LF, so you shouldn't have any trouble there - well, I mean, any more trouble than the usual gigantic troubles that most of us have to forge through to get our start in this breed.... How exciting for you Jeremy. Good luck!

Come see me Jeremy. I have a LF beautiful white roo over the tiniest bantam hen you ever did see. I figure the offspring will probably be somewhere in between. I am just starting to set her eggs. I hopefully will have some hatch in the next couple of weeks. Also something to consider is that Araucana really arn't large to start with. I do have a couple of roos that weight about 7lbs each but that is fairly rare from what I have seen.

Remember Karen has bantams also. She has bbr and the mille.

I know!

As if only letting me have bantams would be enough to stop me...

I'm not too concerned about what color they are.

I do however want to start with a line that lays a blue, blue egg though. (Who doesn't?)

I like Buff and Red colored birds... throw in some Blue highlights and I would be in love!

I didn't see a breeders directory right away when I visited the club website, does anyone know where I could find something like that?
