Araucana thread anyone?

I have noticed her. Thats Garys bird isn't it? She is the nicest one I have seen. I have been trying to get ahold of him so I could get some hopefully wheaten chicks but no reply yet.

i think my question got missed earlier, how do you tell the difference between a regular splash chick and a cuckoo based splash?

I've found that the cuckoo chicks are usually a little more grey looking. It's really hard to tell until they start to feather out. Some of the cuckoo chicks can be pretty washed out and look totally splash, but if you look closely at their feathers, you can see some of the light cuckoo marking. This is what I have found in many of mine.

My regular splash chicks hatch white grey and yellow, like a splash. The cuckoo chicks hatch grey and splotchy white, and as they feather out their feathers are cuckoo, even the light cuckoo ones.

Hey Lanae,

As far as Araucana leg color I found that on the Araucana Club of America. However, I am curious if certain leg colors are suppose to go with certain feather colors.

Should a white bird possess yellow, willow or black? Or any of those on a white bird?

White birds should have yellow legs. There is no standard for cuckoo under the araucana but I believe that yellow will be the easiest. All other colors should be willow with the exception of black which should be slate, which is black over yellow skin.

Araucana should have yellow skin.

Yes this is fine. I read somewhere that if a birds black stops suddenly on its feet, like in a straight line accross the feet it is an indicator that they have the mottling gene. I have noticed that all my mottled birds have this definate demarcation where their black stops. I only have 1 pure black bird and her legs and feet are solid slate with yellow soles, so I don't know if that theory holds true or not.

I just love my new Araucana chicks. It is so exciting to see tufts! I tried to get more pics. I do not think I will have any good ones until I get them outside.

They are the friendliest chicks. They jump on my arm right away. When I was trying to take the pics they were all trying to dust bathe on my polar fleece sweats. Crazy chicks.

Here is my double tufted one. I am not really a fan of white, but I adore this chick.

This one has a single small tuft of course on the other side. I can not wait to see how it's color turns out.

And here is my blue with a large single tuft.
