Araucana thread anyone?

The bird is eightish weeks old now. I'll be sure to get some better pictures in better light today.

Nope, no special care, except for the occasional bum fluff trim (if needed) for fertility if the birds are rumpless. Other than that, they're the same as any other chicken. Mine are very friendly and curious! They come running whenever they see me walk out the door. I think the word quirky best describes them, hah.

Never met a mean Araucana cockerel/rooster. They don't need special care. Vent fluff trimming is only if you truly need it, I've only trimmed vents maybe three times (on three different birds) but mainly for reasons unrelated to them being rumpless or having too much fluff.

Araucana like doing things their own way. If you let them out of their pen but put food on the ground for them they will ignore the food to run and find their own. They love foraging for food. They are also amazinly nosy birds. We are always building something or working on go carts or something here and if the araucana are out of their pens and can here us, they come running to see what we are doing. They will stand on tools or you to get a better look at what you are doing. Usually getting in the way. My husband is always yelling " Go Away, Shoooo"

They are goofy looking birds running around the yard. Especially a tufted rumpless roo with his skirt of saddle feathers bouncing with every step.

As far as vent trimming, that is up to each person. With some birds its more necessary than others, it depends on how much fluff they have. Its not just for fertility, but can sometimes become necessary because of mud, dirt, or poop caked in their behind fluff. Some girls are a little rounder than others and can't reach it all to keep clean, same for boys.

I've got one. Has to be watched constantly when you are in his pen. I would make soup of him except he is a Blue Red and wildly double tufted. As a young bird he was so pretty I named him Handsome. As punishment for making me bleed he gets his butt trimed.

Yes you do not want to many chickens. If you are to have too many of any chickens the best would be Araucanas.

They are my favorite chicken I have.

Had another wonderful hatch this weekend. I had 23 out of 24 hatch. Alot of tufted and alot of wheatens.


I finally have a tufted rumpless muffed and bearded chick from my blue egger pen. It may even be crested but wont know for a week or so since the crests seem to be fairly small in this generation.

The weather turned beautiful this weekend and four of the girls greeted the sun by going broody and staying in their nests. UGH!

I hatched out a nice tufted/rumpless chick from Obi's pen today. This chick is out of the tailed/tufted hens, There is one hen that looks to be a duckwing (?) splash and I think she's this chicks mother.
The chick has a good sized tuft on one side, a decent one on the other side. Looks duckwing, maybe. Dad is Obi

I'm holding it till I can sex it and see what the feather color is going to be for sure. These chipmunk striped chicks really throw me off still. If it's duckwing, I'd be interested in a swap for a black pullet. Way too early to know anything but just a thought if you're still into the color.
