Araucana thread anyone?

I got eggs from South of time farms in Tx. I got 12 eggs and only 2 chicks went to lockdown. Being real new to trying to hatch arancuanas, I don't know how much shipping them from Tx to Mi might have had on hatchability or whether riding in an extremely cold truck did them in. But anyway I got a silver chick and a lavender. But like I said, neither made it. I would definately buy from Marie at South of Time again in a heart beat. She knows her stuff and has been at this for a long time.

well, she may be nice to deal with the their prices are crazy IMO. They don't show a good example of an araucana in their flock, only two pics of the same lav roo that is either tailed or has sprigs, and is clean faced(or looks like it, not good pics). If you are going to charge $42 for 6 eggs I would like to see the hens they are coming from....but maybe that's just me

That rooster in the pic looks like a lavender/araucana orpington cross. The picture is not clear and the body type is more like an orpington. Maybe this person crossed them by accident?

It would be best to contact Hinkjc directly and get them from her. She has wonderfully stunning lavender araucanas.

Eggs through the mail is always a gamble. So much can happen to them, not just breaking. A common occurance is the air sac is dislodged or even broken.

I am not sure if Harry(Shaffer) still has a lav araucana project too. I have a real nice, huge, triple tufted rumpless lav split roo I hatched from his eggs a few years ago. I lost all my girls to a coyote before I got a chance to put this roo with them

. I have a slightly tufted tailed lav roo from the Hinkles from 2 years ago and I hatched a clean faced rumpless lav girl last year but she is small and I am afraid to put her in any of those pens

. I will have to decide soon but I really love the roo from Harry because of his size and type. I miss having my rumpless girls running around

Does anyone else feel bad shuffling their girls around? I have a tailed araucana girl that is 4 years old and has been with my wheaten ameraucana boy and I feel bad taking her from him. Although she is frequently trying to get into my Shaffer roo's pen....so maybe I shouldn't feel too bad?

Krista,
I still have Lavender Araucanas but like I said in the PM I have nothing for sale. I had someone that was suppose to buy all my Araucanas but it fell through and it definately wasn;t the cost since I sell very , very reasonable even hathcing eggs. I am a hobbiest and not in it for the money. Sorry, I could not help you at this time. Harry Shaffer

It wasn't meant badly, sorry if it came across that way. I thought the pm only discussed black araucana, was just putting the possible resource for lav out there....didn't know if you still had the lav araucana ....

Krista,
I did not take it like it was meant badly. I just have nothing for sale in any breeds this year. I have turned a lot of people away since I culled to my bare minimum and now my hens are all going broody so I may not even be able to fill just one of my many incubators. I told you your best and most economically resort would be to get some lavender ameraucanas and cross them since they are readily available and that is what everyone else's birds originated from. To buy shipping hatching eggs from Araucanas are one of the riskiest breeds to pursue. You will only have to deal with putting yellow on their legs which is a simple task and remove the muffs and beards and a lot of the ameracuanas are carrying only one gene unless the breeder test mated their birds. I have done so with my ameraucanas roosters but not the hens since it will take a lot more time to do so. You will have no issues with the egg color generally by doing this cross if you use a Lav Orp you will have a lot more recessive genes to clean up. I am sure you have the knowledge to perfect a nice strain. Good luck and if you need some help just ask. Harry

Will these all just be regular black? They all are slightly different. I know I am splitting hairs here, but if there is ever a forum to split hairs about Araucana, I figure this is it! Will they be plain black?

Teeny light splash on head, light legs, mostly light beak

Blue, right?

??

Really, really black head and very dark back, dark legs, mostly very dark beak

The top one looks like a cuckoo, it may or may not show prominent barring once mature. The second one is likely either a silver based female or a golden male, will be mixed black and white or golden coloration. Hard to describe as they do vary. The third is a blue. The last appears blue as well.

Thanks for that Illia! I thought they would all be black, except for the blue. Glad I asked - I almost gave them away as I am looking for more interesting colors. That's settled... they'll stay. :)

I was bummed today because my hatch was just about complete for the weekend and I hadn't gotten any tufted chicks this go around. I was packaging up a box of Ameraucana chicks that I had sold, getting them ready to ship, and my daughter who is three years old reached into the box and pulled out a little splash chick and said "This one isn't an Easter Egger mom, it has tufts. I said "No honey, it's just got really big muff and beard, look, I'll show you." I grabbed it up (you all see where this is going, I know) and darned if that little thing doesn't have two great big fluffy tufts and no tail!! It must have hatched and then jumped the separators somehow - I keep the breeds separated when they are hatching. I had even toe punched the little thing as an Ameraucana!!! How embarrassing! Thanks to my little sidekick for saving me from a super oops!!
