Araucana thread anyone?

Hi all,

This is Kiwi, who is rumpless, tufted, and is 12 days old today. After taking these pictures, I noticed his/her bill seems slightly crooked and mis-shaped. He seems quite vigorous and healthy, but perhaps a bit skinnier than his siblings. I haven't watched him eat so I don't know if he's having problems with it. Has anyone seen this before? Any ideas of a prognosis? Thanks!

Kirsten
Do a search for Crossbeak. Aparently it is pretty common and not really cureable but some birds live with it better than others. Unfortunatly it all depends on how well they can eat. Lots of people cull if they have it. We have a Favorelle roo with it and he is currently just a pet looking for a new home as he is not breeding material. He is pretty (except for the crooked face) and our biggest bird. Good luck.

I have a fertility/breeding question. My boy is crowing and dancing and jumping the girls at 4 mo. old. No eggs from my girl yet. Once she is laying, how long should I give them to "mature" before I can try hatching some of the eggs?

For these Araucana do you want to breed a tuffed roo to an un-tuffed hen or vise versa??? I was wondering because i read that the double tuffed gene will cause the chick to die in the shell. I am trying to understand and learn more about the breed! Any other breeding tips would be greatly appreciated. I purchased some hatching eggs reciently and want to learn more!

As I understand it approx 25% die in the shell from double tufted parents. I think those that chose to breed tufted to tufted do so b/c even though some die in the shell you statistically end w/ fewer non tufted chicks.

Can I get another gender opinion? Originally I had thought both these were males. Now I'm starting to wonder if the 1st picture is a girl after all. They're 6 1/2 wks old.
Can anyone tell if the 1st is a girl? (I left the pictures big).

Ksane, is the color in the pic pretty true? In the first one w/ the pinker comb, the background also has a pink cast making me think the comb might not be as pink in real life as it is in this pic.

The size of the comb in the first one is sure smaller then the second, and really doesn't have that distinct of the three rows you think of for a boy, but it sure does show pink???? Sorry I'm totally on the fence especially about the first one. I see all boy in the second though, even w/ the more pale color.

But hopefully someone more skilled then me will weigh in.

Silverfox, I hope you're right!
Kass, yes-the pictures were taken at different sides of a room so the pinker tint is the lighting. I didn't see the 3 rows either, that's why I started hoping it was a girl and not a boy like I'd thought all along. I thought I had 4 out of 7 boys but I may not have that many.

Wait a minutes. SIlverfox I read your post wrong. Actually I was thinking just the opposite. That the 1st pic was possibly a pullet. I'm 99% sure the 2nd one is a roo. He acts all roo, too.
