Araucana thread anyone?

Hi all,

This is Kiwi, who is rumpless, tufted, and is 12 days old today. After taking these pictures, I noticed his/her bill seems slightly crooked and mis-shaped. He seems quite vigorous and healthy, but perhaps a bit skinnier than his siblings. I haven't watched him eat so I don't know if he's having problems with it. Has anyone seen this before? Any ideas of a prognosis? Thanks!

Kirsten

You should post that question in the emergencies/diseases/cures section, too. Hopefully that will get some responses! Wish I could help...

The little araucana pullet I got from cashdl finally started laying. Here's her pretty blue egg alongside one of my EE eggs.
Gorgeous. Thanks, Lanae!

Here's my tufted rumpless pullet - she has a few stray tailfeathers.

...and my goofy little cockerel named parmesan. The name was a threat - but his attitude improved so he didn't become dinner. I think it was a teenage hormone thing...

Chick pics! Two groups of three, being raised by broodies. One group is a week older than the other, and is ALL male, doh!

First group, younger set of three. Hoping the blues are girls, at least.

Tufted/rumpless, not sure on color

Blue! Tufted and rumpless too

Tufted and tailed blue chickie

Second set. Can you tell why this one screams BOY?!

A blue lad

Barred/cuckoo boy?

Wow, Stacy, they're beautiful! I love that frosty gray color. I wanted Blue (still do), that's one of my favorite chick colors. What nice coloring in them all :))
From Deb's eggs I got a really pretty rumpless Splash pullet and a tailed male with huge double tufts.....now according to logics I should get ALL Blue chicks from those 2 and at least some should be tufted and rumpless both.
Parmesan is a fine looking boy, too, Mendo!

An interesting historical tidbit. I have a 1983 ABA Bantam Standard left from my college days when I was considering raising modern games (long story!). At that time, three classes of Araucana bantams were recognized and showable:

1. Tufted and rumpless
2. Tufted and tailed
3. Non-tufted and rumpless

Now wouldn't that make life easier?! I wonder when that changed.

I love blue too. Something about it is very pretty to me. Though your splash pair, if bred together, will produce 100% splash. If you bred a splash to a black, then you'd get 100% blue. Here is the run down of BBS breedings, taken from here.

Blue x Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Black, 25% Splash
Blue x Splash = 50% Blue, 50% Splash
Blue x Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black
Black x Splash = 100% Blue
Black x Black = 100% Black
Splash x Splash = 100% Splash

I forgot to put the tailed double tufted male is Black. That's the chart I was looking at and my Black and rumpless Splash should give me Blue

I want a Blue the shade of yours though-where do I put in my request for that shade? lol Hopefully the rumpless gene is dominant.

Oh cool. Sorry, the way I read it, I understood it as you having a splash boy and girl, since you didn't mention the black.

You are in luck that the rumpless gene is dominant, so it'll be a good pairing!
