Araucana thread anyone?

totally not talking sop. his colors are awesome. perhaps the sop should be changed to encourage color. :)

beautiful bird.

He is a BBR originally from Banjoejoe, but I think Ksane now has his parents. His father is stunning colored. It is my understanding his leg color is wrong for SOP and he is not wheaten based but wild (hope I got that right cashdl)
Yep that right, but his ovrall color is looking very good. His legs look like they are greening up a bit so he may have one copy o f( id) and can then pass it on. The interesting thing about BBR is that the roos as adults look almost identical no matter if they are wheaten or wild type.

And no the SOP won't change to account for color. The wheaten based BBR is a special color only found in a few other breeds and it actually acts like a recessive and will every once in a while hatch from wild type. You can only tell by chick down and adult female coloring, so in this respect it is one of the rare true original colors of the araucana because it is hidden in their genes. This color is seen more commonly in South America where it pops up more frequently. I personally would prefer that they change the name of this color to Black Red or Dark Wheaten to better reflect the color it really is. BBR or Black Breasted Red is too confusing because everyone assumes it is the same as Old English Game BBR Espcially since the Goldens and Silvers are the same in the Old English Game.

Not that I don't care about the SOP, but I like what I like, and Ari is developing beautifully. Awesome colors!

i care about the sop. i, however, do not care for the condescending tone often used when it's mentioned. even though i was teasing (and i was), i totally understand why some folks don't get involved with the breed of their choice's organization. from afar, sometimes, it looks like some of the organization folks are straight from a scary movie. you know the ones where there are mangled body parts, chainsaws, and some crazy old lady in a two-story house yelling about the "new times" and how horrible they are. hahahahahha.

anyway, i have a beautiful wheaton based boy. weather permitting, i'll try to get pics of him today.

have a great sunday!

Thanks about Ari.

As to chickens in general I think people raise chickens for all kinds of reasons and there is plenty of room in chickendom for all types, serious SOP'ers, those working to maintain old almost extinct types, designer chicken mixers, backyard chickeners letting "nature take it's course", survival of the fitest chickeners, micro flock owners that don't do any breeding/hatching at all, people who eat their chickens, people who make thier chickens pets, etc................. Everyone needs to live and let live, enjoy thier chickens and let everyone else enjoy thiers. Most of the "designer" chicken makers and SOP'ers have a wealth of genetics knowledge, most are kind enough to share it with those of us that don't have the inclination, or situation to be serious breeders. I have recieved a lot of very friendly and useful info from cashdl, kev, beekissed, resolution, poco pollo, and many others all w/ very different chickening styles and goals.
