Chic where are you located and what are you interested in. There are members here all over the country and someone may be able to hook you up with a breeder of the birds you are looking for. I think the downfall with hatcheris is that people buy from the expecting to get the birds that are pictured, and more times than not, there are just simiarlarities with them. There are those out there that are happy with having their hatchery birds, then there are those who want pure birds. Its just a matter of preference.
I live in the Roanoke Va area and have not found anyone, on here or otherwise, that could really help me. I guess I should just keep looking. I think I just picked the wrong season to get into chickens.

If SLWs are one of your top choices I would encourage you to find a breeder to get chicks or if you can find one, one who sells hatching eggs. 99 times out of 100 you will be disapponted in the quality of the hatchery birds. Not only do they usually not have the lacing they are supposed to but their body type is not even close to looking like a wyandotte should.
Ok, this is all good info, and thanks to everyone for being informative and not offensive. lol. I hate to get heated about chickens.lol. Anyways, Is MPC supposed to better than McMurrays? That looks like a good route but if the birds arent better quality than I am in the same boat.
Hi chick..
I think if I was you what I would do is keep a eye open on suppliers like:
twincitypoultrysupplies.com, randallburkey.com or poultrymansupply.com for a sale on a incubator and egg turner combo set.. Then in the spring get some hatching eggs from the good breeders here on BYC.. I think you will be more better off doing things this was because you know what you are going to get...
So is it going to be the same story with any hatchery? I think that deal on MPC looks great but if they are crappy birds I don't want them either. I am also on a tight budget so thats another reason I am going the hatchery route. I think I just might go the hatchery route to begin with and then later when I have some experience and money and know exactly what I want, I will go the breeder route. I am about to start nursing school anyways so I don't have all the time in the world for dealing with breeding etc. I don't know what I was thinking.
To me i had gotten hatchery birds as chicks, i did not care about the quality at the time.
And it is true a lot of people will tell you if you want SQ dont go through hatchery, BUT,
I have a SQ Polish that came from hatchery he does great at shows, when i tell people he is from a hatchery they are surprised.
I also have a Red Cochin bantam that came from hatchery, and when i brought him to show i was told that he has great red feathering, but a too much black in his tail, but he is great to breed with a red Cochin hen, then i would pure SQ from his babys.
I believe you get what you get and work with from there.
I got lucky.
When you order, what you do is, you get the experience learn what makes a SQ out of that breed.
Then you separate your SQ From PQ, and if you get lucky with a lot of SQ you advertise them as SQ.
If you don't then advertise on there production and usefulness egg layer, what ever there quality is great for.
I wish you the best of luck.
Also there is a lot and i mean lot that look for just good cute backyard chickens as pets and eggs layers.
