ARE "ASPEN" chips/shavings bedding OK for the chickens?

That's weird, maybe they got a notice from the manufacturer that something was wrong with that batch?

Stay away from Kaytee brand aspen bedding. I lost chicks when using it. When I examined the shavings further I found that the whole bag smelled strong of a chemical like smell.

Other brands of apsen I have used were just fine. But just to be safe I am now using pine.

That's funny. I'm looking for a chicken bedding right now, and I considered aspen. We use aspen for our guinea pigs and rabbit, and the dust hasn't been an issue. But what has been an issue was pine bedding we bought from Kaytee a while ago. Not only did it cause my very healthy show guinea pig to develop a respiratory disease, but we also have reason to believe that there were lice eggs in the bedding, because she came down with lice 2 days after I put the bedding in. It was difficult and expensive to get rid of the lice, and my other guineas got it too. I don't trust Kaytee brand much, especially after hay we bought from them made my rabbit sick. He'd been eating Oxbow brand hay, but when he had just a few handfuls of Kaytee hay, he got sick. After hearing that you lost chickens using it, I most definitely won't use it.

EDIT: The aspen we use for our guinea pigs is Mallard, in case anyone wants to know. It's a very good bedding, and it's well-priced. Recommend it to anyone :)
